Community Board Update

October 7, 2014 October 2014 Comments Off on Community Board Update

It has been nearly a year since the Local Government elections, a third of the way through the triennium and a good time to reflect on the term so far and what lies ahead.

Looking back, I’ve learnt that whilst we may not be able to please everyone, all the time, that doesn’t stop us trying, and it doesn’t stop us feeling disappointed when we don’t succeed. That’s not just your elected representatives but also for the Council team who work tirelessly and sometimes thanklessly to implement Council and Community Board decisions. … Continue Reading

Fire Brigade

October 7, 2014 October 2014 Comments Off on Fire Brigade

Thanks to everyone in the community for being extra careful this winter as the number of emergency call outs has been well below the average for August and September (to date). The brigade responded to 3 medical assist calls including a motor vehicle accident. One chimney fire required little intervention by the Brigade. Homeowners are encouraged to call 111 if a chimney fire is suspected rather than delay in hopes it will burn itself out.
There were two alarm activations which proved to be system malfunctions. One bon fire was extinguished by the owner. A shed and vegetation fire out of town required responses from Carterton and Featherson and resources from rural fire brigades in Tora and Lake Ferry. Another call to rescue a cat was turned back as it escaped before help arrived.

A Reminder: Now that you have changed your clocks, change those smoke alarm batteries. Smoke alarms save lives!

Letter

To the Martinborough Public,

My husband and I have lived in Martinborough for over six years now and, in the last two to three years, Graham has walked our ginger and white (honey-coloured, Honey) Fox-Terrier/Beagle-cross dog around the streets of Martinborough.
As they wandered the town many of you would take the time to pause, chat and interact with them. Graham would arrive home from these walks and tell me all about whomever he had met with that day.

Graham died on September 9. I wanted to make this opportunity to thank you all for the time you took to talk with him, for the way so many of you ‘watched over’ him, for all the thoughtful cards of condolence, for your ‘Martinborough caring’. I will always be grateful for the love you showed toward him.

My sincere thanks,
Patricia Hill

Mark, MAMIL, and Martinborough

Mark-MAMIL-and-Martinborough There must be something special about Martinborough because people come to live here and get hooked on the place. Actor Mark Hadlow is proud to declare that this is exactly what happened to him, to the extent that he is bringing his one-man show MAMIL (that’s Middle Aged Man In Lycra) to Martinborough in November. Not only that, all the proceeds from the gala opening night on 6 November will go to the Town Hall Rebuild Fund. Now that really is supporting your community. … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …
