The newly formed Social Committee held its first event with the theme “Mid Winter Meet ‘n Greet” on Saturday 21st of June at the beautiful home of Jacob and Kirsty Hawkins. The event was a great opportunity for our volunteers to reconnect with past members and to recognise the supporting role our partners provide to keep the brigade running.

Almost 60 guests attended, made up of current Brigade Members, Life Honorary Members, an Honorary member and their partners.  The event was a huge success. A large number of people who attended  have asked when the next event will be held!

The Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade is working hard to ensure our membership base is maintained in the long term. We want the Fire Brigade to be an attractive place to volunteer. Research shows that the social atmosphere of a Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of three top factors that encourage members of the community to remain as serving members across New Zealand.

The Social Committee has been formed at the request of the Brigade to plan an annual calendar of events for that purpose.  Kate says “Our small team is committed to supporting our Brigade and Community.”.

There were two serious structure fires since the last report causing significant damage. A corn dryer at a farm overheated requiring the use of Class A foam to suppress the fire in the corn.

The second fire at a homestead out of town involved most of the ceiling void. A smoke alarm alerted the owner who was outside the house at the time who then called 111. There were 3 vegetation fires, 5 calls for medical assistance along with one false alarm due to an alarm panel malfunction in a winery.

A crew of 5 and truck was sent to Greytown for several hours to cover that town while their brigade was attending a major incident in Masterton. Our second truck and crew were on standby here in town in case of a local incident. Those windy days resulted in only one call to secure a sign.

The most unusual call out in a long time was to rescue a bull in an empty swimming pool. Two of our crew, Andy Stuart and Jamie Brock used their farming background to encourage the beast up the steps and out to swim another day.
