A great day/stay for the Martinborough School Kapa haka Group

July 2, 2014 July 2014 No Comments

a-great-day_webWhat a wonderful day we had at Hauariki Marae on Friday 13th June with the middle/senior Kapa haka Group and their whanau. The sun came out and the Powhiri begun with Yvette Flutey, Delta Hutchings & Waikura Waata-Dawson performing a karanga that sent shivers down our spines…. well done ladies!

Thanks goes to all the parents/whanau, teachers & volunteers who came along to teach the children some amazing activities: making Takakau Bread, Headband weaving, Harakeke weaving, Maori Art, Te Reo through Ukulele & an awesome sight watching 40 kids learning Taiaha outside the Wharenui.

Another highlight was watching the kids work together in their groups during the activities, for Dinner/Dishes, Breakfast, & Clean up as well as for the “Kapa haka’s got Talent” competition in the evening. The whole day/overnight stay was a great learning experience for everyone and has hopefully brought the kapa haka group closer as a whanau.

Our special thanks to Rita Hiha, Kevin Huanui, Andy Thompson, Marama & Rangitunoa Mete-Smith and Francis Mcnally-Te Maari (Whanau Ora Wairarapa) for passing on your valuable knowledge and skills.
