A ‘shout’ for Martinborough School

Martinborough School was placed 2nd! In 2014 Wairarapa Times Age Sports Awards recognising primary schools for overall sporting excellence and participation. A terrific achievement or so say Property Brokers Martinborough a key sponsor of the event.

Martinborough School has a role of 245 students ranging from Year 1 – 8 and 14 teaching staff. The school’s philosophy is ‘sport for all’; everyone is encouraged and has the opportunity to take part in a variety of sport, irrespective of any social, socio-economic or cultural differences.

During the summer season the school run skills programmes. This includes kiwi cricket, grass hopper tennis, swim for life, softball, rippa rugby, mini-ball and basketball. The winter consists of rugby, soccer, hockey, netball and squash. Many of the children participate in several different sports, and teams, at one time. The school offer the children extra training and fitness outside the learning hours with a Bike Club and Harriers Club. During Term 1 of each year, children are learnt the skills of swimming, running and biking. These skills are brought together with a triathlon.

Teachers, coaches and volunteers are involved to drive the delivery of the programme and get children involved. Their goal is to have fun, learn skills, promote equality and compete.

Martinborough School has a number of children who have excelled and achieved at a representative level during the period of April 1st 2013 – February 28th 2014, at their sport and resulting in being chosen to represent the Wairarapa in team and individual events. From U11 & U13 representative cricket, to U10 Representative Tennis, to U13 representative hockey, to rugby.

The school had students participate in the Wairarapa Swimming meet, Wellington Athletics and Wellington Cross country and some gained top results. The schools Jump Jam Team of 10 came 2nd at the Regionals in Tauranga and 5th in the Nationals in Auckland.

Last year one of our students was runner up in Maori Junior sportsman of the year. Wairarapa Bush Rugby has acknowledged the leadership skills run through our sports programme and invited a student to be a ball person at an important rugby match.

At Martinborough School we have an emphasis on teaching skills. They need these skills to participate in our sports programmes and to be able to be involved in everyday games the students play. This has provided the students with social and educational opportunities, encouraging healthy lifestyles, life skills and friendships that they will be able to use in the future.

Congratulations Martinborough school we think you are fantastic, to recognise this achievement ice-creams were taken to school for everyone on Friday 20th June and were received by 200+ happy faced children.
