MAMIL_Background_FATHE MARTINBOROUGH COMMUNITY CENTRE Project Update

Gala Opening Night for Hometown Show.

MAMIL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra)
Starring beloved New Zealand actor and Martinborough local, Mark Hadlow
One of New Zealand’s most beloved actors, Mark Hadlow is bringing his one man show to his home town in November. Hadlow, who has lived in Martinborough with his wife Jane since 2012, enjoyed a big success in the ‘90’s with his one man show SNAG. In the sequel, his character is a little older but none the wiser as he returns to the stage as the most polarising of species – a middle aged man in lycra – MAMIL.

Hadlow, an enthusiastic supporter of the refurbishment of the old Town Hall, is generously donating proceeds from a Gala opening night on the 6th to the Martinborough Community Centre project. The new play by Gregory Cooper will play in Martinborough Town Hall November 6-8.

Hadlow says he could not resist the opportunity to include his home town on his nationwide tour. He describes the Town Hall as a vital community asset “I mean you just don’t see theatres like this in New Zealand anymore. When the Hall is re-done, it will be a huge success. Shows will be lining up to come here, it will be packed. The possibilities for the future of the Hall as a performance venue are huge.”

Supporter Profile: Phillip Percy and Perception Planning

Phillip moved to Martinborough in 2006 with his wife Sarah. They now have two young children who were the inspiration behind his charming books based on local characters Roger Mills and Lance Phelps.

He set up Perception Planning, an environmental and resource management planning consultancy in 2007. With fellow director Helen Marr, they have grown the business so that it now employs five planners and a part time office administrator in Martinborough and has clients all over New Zealand. The firm is generously providing professional assistance to the Community Centre project team at a heavily discounted rate.

We asked Phillip to share his thoughts about Martinborough and the Town Hall and Community Centre project.
“We love that Martinborough has such a diverse and vibrant community and the idea of being involved in a project that supports the community is exciting. I remember watching my son Oliver explore, as a toddler, all of those little details of the exterior of the building that we miss as adults – gully-traps, spaces under stairs, gaps between bricks.”

“Martinborough is special for us for its environment (in the broadest sense) – great climate, excellent geographical location, a brilliant community, and wonderful natural resources at our doorstep. It is also a great place to do business and there are fantastic education facilities for our children.

Best advice you’ve ever been given?
My Dad used to say ‘hold him Stoney’ whenever my brother or I were trying to control one of his wild bucking sheep. I always took it to mean take opportunities when they present themselves even if there is a bit of pain involved because you’re unlikely to get another chance anytime soon.

One thing most people don’t know about you?
I love tinkering with classic cars.
