Fire Brigade
Since the last report, the Brigade has responded to 16 emergency calls. Springtime means dry grass and high winds with no exception this year. Although there were 6 calls relating to vegetation fires or wind, our district fared better than others in the area.
There were two fires causing extensive damage to farm tractors. Our appliances travelled more kilometres than usual as 12 of the calls were in rural areas to suppress vegetation fires, provide medical assistance (including helicopter landing sites), assist in motor vehicle crashes and secure the scene where power lines were down.
In addition to emergency call outs and training every week, the Brigade supported the Fire Fighters Ride for Cancer by providing the Red Knights Motorcycle Club a coffee and snack break as they travelled through town on their way to the top of the North Island.
The annual fish auction was again a success with Jim Brasell auctioning off the Pukemanu Fishing Clubs catch generating over $2600 for the Brigade. This year’s auction is helping to fund our purchase of civil defence emergency supplies and lockers at the station.
Another annual event is the Brigade’s support for the Food Bank appeal. Sirens could be heard on every street in town seeking donations for the South Wairarapa Rotary Club. For the Martinborough Business Association’s barrel race as part of Toast, we all had fun providing a “wet zone”, hosing down contestants as they competed in the square.
