South Wairarapa Tramping Club

February 9, 2015 February 2015 No Comments

Following a particularly windy December, the weather settled down for the summer walking season. As usual there were no trips over the Christmas/New Year period as members’ family commitments took precedence.
Since then the weather has settled down and enjoyable trips have included an eight member ascent of Mt Reeves, a 12 member trip from the mouth of the Orongorongo River, via Turakirae Head to Kotumu Stream on the South coast. This was essentially the other half of an earlier trip from Ocean Beach towards the Orongorongo River, and the completion of the entire coastal walk.

This was followed by a 14 member trip through the Putuna Chasm, a stunning walk through a surreal landscape that will leave a strong impression on all who completed this unique trip. More recent expeditions have included Ponatahi Hill via Foreman Jury Road to Riverside Road (seven members), a paddle down the Lower Tauherenikau Gorge (five members), and a traverse of the Rocky Hills (15 members).

Trips planned for February and include:
7 February – Pahaoa north to Honeycomb Rock – leaders Rosie and Ian Montgomerie – ph 06 304 9252
Subsequent trips for which details have yet to be settled, include:
14 February – Boom Rock Coast west of Ohariu Valley,
21 February – Tauanui Stream, SW Aorangi Forest Park,
28 February – Sutherland’s Hut (via Ruakokoputuna Road).

Interested persons are most welcome. Please phone the nominated leader by the Thursday evening prior to the trip for trip details and weather outlook.

Please phone Lynne King for upcoming details and confirmations (04 478 7795).

For general enquiries regarding the club’s activities call Ed Cooke, Club President (06 304 9497) or Carol Major, Club Secretary, (06 304 8210).
