Junior tennis

March 13, 2015 March 2015, Sports No Comments

Junior-tennis The junior tennis club has continued its popularity with over 70 children signing up for Monday tennis at the start of Term 1.   Thank you to all the parents that have volunteered with the help roster, as with the number of children participating we would not be able to manage.

These continued numbers have also developed players so the Martinborough club now has three junior interclub teams for the first time playing in the Wairarapa competition on Friday afternoons.  Most weeks at least one of these teams has a home game at the Martinborough courts, so anyone is welcome to come along and support.
One of our juniors have also progressed through the junior team and is now playing senior interclub at the age of 11 years of age, and is showing his maturity with his play and attitude – congratulations Shane Colton.
The on-going development of junior players at the club has also led to a number of them being selected for the Wairarapa representative squads at their various age groups.

On 22nd March the first Wairarapa junior rep match for the season was held at the Wanganui Tennis Club.  This saw local players Brooke Colton (14 year age group), Shane Colton & Marcus Laing in the 12’s age group, Jack Lovell and Flynn Nicholson (in the 10’s age group) all travel to Wanganui for the fixture.  Of this group of players they won all their matches over the tie, and Wairarapa beat Wanganui in the overall fixture.  Congratulations to them all.
