Day one. Toby and John about to set off from Cape Reinga.

On 19th February Toby Sutherland and John Taylor set of to ride their bikes from Cape Reinga to the Bluff, a distance of over 3,000 kms. The route they are following is one devised by Johnathon Kennett as ‘Tour Aotearoa’, one of the World’s great bike rides. The route encompasses a combination of cycle tracks, paths and lanes connected by enjoyable country roads.

Toby and John are receiving sponsors for the ride with the raised funds going to Cat Walk Trust and Light Flight. Donations made be made through the Give a little website. Cat Walk Trust was set up by former leading equestrian Catriona Williams to care for spinal injury victims and support realistic research towards these people walking again. Of the second recipient there is little doubt that everybody is aware of the work of Life Flight Trust.

The trail zig zags across the North Island to an extent to encorporate the best rides taking in Miranda Springs, Matamata, Taumaranui, Whanganui and then across to come down through the Wairarapa. The South Island route goes from Picton to Nelson and then down the West Coast to Haast, Wanaka and Queesnstown and finally to Bluff.

This itinerary calls for some very serious cycling of around an average 100 Kms a day with up to 150 kms some days. The ride from Eketahuna to Martinborough, where they are due to arrive on March 4th, is 138 kms.

The ride ends at Bluff on March 19th. . five This will be followed by a well earned five days break, with a bit of fishing, at Stewart Island.
