August Martinborough Golf Club

September 21, 2016 September 2016 No Comments

Golf-Club The big news from the Golf Club this month is the national success of one of our Martinborough members. Jaquee Reid is the National Winner of the Sue Bunt 9 Hole Home Links Competition and will receive the prestigious Sue Bunt Salver and sponsored prizes. Amazingly, Jaquee won over thousands of 9 Hole women golfers across the country, and even more amazing is that Jaquee only took up golf two and a half years ago. Very well done Jaquee!

The women’s combined 9 and 18 holers day held in early August was all about fun and meeting people. The format for the day was Canadian Foursomes off the new red tees, which proved to be a hit. The formula used for handicaps was fun, where the combined age, halved, gave a negative Nett score for some. Kris Chamberlain and Gretel Dick had the best Gross with 59, 2nd Jane Terpstra and Mariana Mc Dermott Gross 60, 3rd Jo Loe and Adele Cairns Gross 63. In the Nett, 1st was Leonie Wilde and Sherry Weatherstone with an amazing Nett -11 (nothing to do with their ages of course), 2nd Nita Edwards and Jaclyn Kras Nett 3 on a c/b to Jenny Tucker and Sandra Petersen. Nearest the Pin’s: Number 6: Mariana Mc Dermott, Number 8: Sue Dalton, Number 12: Sharon Jepson, and Number 16: Jo Loe.

The Ambrose fundraising tournament played on Friday 12 August, to help with funding three new golf carts, raised around $2,500.00. Thanks to the Petersen Partnership, Ed Elworthy and Tora Station for supplying the meat for the meat packs and to Scotty Meats for the processing. Thanks also to the Members who donated other goods for prizes and the extensive raffle table, your contributions were gratefully received by the Committee and delighted the respective winners. 22 teams turned out to support the day. Results: 1st Team BP with Nett 56.50, 2 Team Dallis Dennis 56.625, 3 Team Kris Chamberlain 58.75, 4 Team Schaef 59.26, 5 Team Walmsley 59.625, 6 Team Hargreaves 60.625, 7 Team Honor Clark 61.875, 8 Team Holmes 62.125. Nearest the Pin: Number 6 Sheldon McNamara, Number 8 Dallis Dennis, Number 12 Raymond Mathews, Number 16 Adele Cairns.

The Club hosted the Bottle ‘O Lefties/Righties Tournament on 21 August, a tourney that attracts golfers from all over the lower North Island. Results: Best Gross: Bill Crook/Wayne Evans 165 on c/b, 2nd Peter Hudson/Malcolm Wood; Best Nett: Mark Casey/Mike O’Shaughnessy 135, 2nd Nigel Messenger/Jim Walsh 139 on c/b; 3rd Chris Brooks/Steve Quinn. Best Nett Women: Audrey Messenger/Mariana McDermott 132; Best Nett Mixed: John and Julie Warner 134. Nearest the Pin: #6 John Schaafhausen, #8 John Mitchell, #12 Bill Crook, #16 Dave Hutchison. Two’s: John Mitchell (2), John Schaafhausen, Greg Stone, Malcolm Wood and Peter Hudson.
The Club Championships, the pinnacle of the golfing calendar, are well underway for this year, with a good number of entries in most divisions. The men’s divisions are into their second round matches, and the women started their matches last week. Good luck to all those golfers taking part – play hard, but play fair!
