Fire Brigade report

Fire-Briade-reportIt been a busy month for members of the Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade.
The local team welcomed two more fully qualified firefighters to its ranks after they graduated from the Fire Services recruit course programme at the national training centre in Rotorua, 3-10 March.

Local Firefighters Emily Abbot and Melinda Coleman supported by members of the brigade began preparing themselves for the course last November. They both gained a great deal from their experiences. On personal reflections, Melinda felt she had achieved beyond her expectations and had gained a great deal of confidence as a result. She thought the real highlight of the programme was meeting other recruits from other parts of New Zealand then sharing the feeling of strong comaraderie that developed within the team.
Emily enjoyed solidifying local knowledge through the various exercises held at the Rotorua facility. … Continue Reading

Great-win-forMartinborough Wairarapa 1st Prize goes south

Martinborough Tennis Club lifted the coveted Gawith Shield last week at the Masterton Tennis Centre, beating Carterton 4 matches to 2 in the finals of the summer competition.
In spite of the best the renowned Spooner brothers could muster, the team from the south took the honours, with Carla Didsbury and Marco de Groot putting icing on the cake in the mixed doubles.   Carla, indeed, was Martinborough’s “secret weapon”, having won her singles earlier, in what turned out to be the only 3-setter of the day.   The other Martinborough team member, Chris Wilkie, played with his usual skill and vigour but narrowly lost his singles to Matt Spooner, 5-7 ,5-7 and put up a good fight with Matt Nicholson in the doubles, losing 4-6, 2-6. Carla has been the mainstay of this team – other members that have contributed to the success of this team have been Dan Nicholson, Duncan Didsbury and Campbell Venning. … Continue Reading

Greytown Concert – Mark Menzies and Guests –

Old and New Music on Old and New Instruments
Virtuoso violinist Professor Mark Menzies, originally from Hawkes Bay, has returned to New Zealand after 20 years in the States, to take up the position of Head of Performance at the Canterbury University School of Music. While Mark, who has established a world-wide reputation as a violinist, violist, pianist, composer, conductor and teacher, has promised to play “audience friendly” music in Greytown, he has actually specialised in contemporary music.
For his 47th birthday he gave a series of four solo violin and viola recitals of old and new music in seven days, including a performance of La Lontananza by Luigi Nono, a 45 minute work for solo violin and eight channels of violin-irradiated electronic music, performed off 8 to 10 music stands. The player is required to move from one stand to another, often zigzagging around the space, producing a dynamic range from what is only audible to a dog, to the loudest sounds the instrument can humanly make. The result is complex and everchanging: from sweet singing to effects of horror, ghostly calm drones, and wondrous calming themes. … Continue Reading

The demolition of the Martinborough Golf Club is complete.
