Before we get on to Clive our mini-speaker this month was Irene Bailey who told us a little of her interesting life. Irene was born in Mosgiel then moved to Waihola, south of Dunedin, when she was four. She lost her mother at the age of 9. Despite this she enjoyed a happy fulfilled childhood helping with all the jobs around the farm. Her father was left with four children – Irene was the youngest – and she became a dab hand at such jobs as driving the horse and plough, taking one end of the crosscut saw and also pretty good with the scythe! Know-your-town Land use in Wharekaka Waihinga

How the land has changed over the years. I will start with the Waihinga and Wharekaka Blocks.
At first the land was cultivated for wheat for flour and oats for fuel for the horses. The large runs and farms all had cowman gardeners who produced milk and vegetables for the workers. The first commercial crop was hops at Dry River the seed being imported by Mr Coleman Philips. The hops were supplied to the two Greytown Breweries. … Continue Reading

Mini-fell-complexWINTER CLOSURE has arrived and this is a time where we can work on the rails and train maintenance so as to be ready to open for our SUMMER SEASON starting with the TRAIN CARNIVAL SATURDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER 2017
Cross Creek Railway’s year has been travelling at full speed. The TRAIN STOP and the Senior Citizen’s Serenity TUNNEL area were completed early in 2016 and have given a lot of joy to everyone. The ENGINE SHED extension started not long after the completion of the Train Stop and Serenity Corner it is coming up to the finish in a week’s time and then the BIG PARTY for all our 82 members in a celebration of what has been achieved in 1 year!!!! … Continue Reading

William Massey, the incumbent Prime Minister of New Zealand, on the 5th April 1916 requested that all Mayors of Cities and Boroughs, would observe a half day commencing on 25th April at 1.00pm in remembrance of the notable deeds performed by our New Zealand soldiers overseas. Ministers of all denominations of religion were asked to provide special services during the afternoon.
