Martinborough A Starlight Reserve

September 13, 2017 September 2017 Comments Off on Martinborough A Starlight Reserve

We all know Martinborough is unique. It is the only town situated east of the Ruamahanga river, there is no noisy state highway passing through it, we have boutique vineyards at our back door, a leafy  square at the centre of the Union Jack town plan. However, there is a starring role for Martinborough that has been overlooked until now, enabled by the lack of light pollution and the proximity to ‘Stonehenge’ and Wellington.
This has got astronomers and tourists excited who have been wowed by the abundant clear night skies in NZ, something that is often sadly lacking at home.
Martinborough now has the infra structure of accommodation, cafes and restaurants to attract night sky watchers from all over the world.
A meeting is to be held in the Lions Clubrooms Wednesday 4th October at 7.00pm where the feasibility and interest of Martinborough becoming a Starlight Village will be discussed. The main issue is likely to be altering the town’s lighting.
Councillors, The Phoenix Astrological Society and interested people have been invited and if the night sky opportunities interest you, please feel free to come along.
