P&K Marty Masters Se7ens 2022

October 14, 2022 October 2022, Sports Comments Off on P&K Marty Masters Se7ens 2022

Winning team Wairarapa United. They specifically wanted to thank Paul Ifill who unfortunately had to leave before the final.

Once again Martinborough FC gives thanks to everyone involved for making the P+K Marty Masters 7s 2022 such an enjoyable event to host and play in. Every year the opposition seems to be getting younger, bigger, and faster, but maybe that is purely just relative!

I only saw the one ‘orange card’ handed out and I think that was even encouraged by members of the same team, never mind the opposition. I was also lucky enough to witness the goal of the day. Thanks must be given also to the Martinborough weather which played its part.

We could not put on this tournament without the generosity of our local community sponsors, please do support them whenever you can.

Martinborough Golf Report

October 14, 2022 October 2022, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough Golf Report

The 2022 winners of the AB Martin cup, father and daughter combination Doug & Olivia Clark.

Another month has gone by and it is good to see some fine days.  The course is slowly drying out with the exception of a couple of areas.  The greens have stood up well to the deluges of rain and are in superb condition – probably the best they have ever been.

We are now entering into the busy time of year regarding tournaments and last weekend we hosted the AB Martin Mixed 4Somes – it was great to see the Martin sisters, Pip, Barb and Cate – they always have such marvellous stories to tell.  This year the winners were father/daughter combination Doug & Olivia Clark with a net 70, 2nd Richard & Nichola Warren, 3rd Brent McKinlay & Ju Allen, 4th Jason Shaw & Cate Crombie, 5th Trevor & Sandra Petersen, 6th Mark Mason & Kris Chamberlain, 7th George Kirk & Philippa Smith, 8th Andy & Netia Morison and 9th Aage & Jane Terpstra.

Grumpies have been getting good turnouts despite the weather and recent winners have been Bill Gordon, Arthur Warren, Brian Russo, Rick Hargreaves and Jason Shaw.  Twos have gone to Raymond Matthews (2), Arthur, Terry Blacktop, Nick Allen and Andy Morison.

The 9 holers have only played a couple of competitions over that last month – they have more sense when it’s raining and go for a coffee!!!  However, Jill Murphy and Lizzy Thomson have both been winners recently. … Continue Reading

Featherston Wrestling Club

October 14, 2022 October 2022, Sports Comments Off on Featherston Wrestling Club

2022 NZ Secondary Schools Team, Nate George, Duncan Allen-Alloway, Angus Read & Jeremy Sargent.

The tournament season is in full swing through August and September with local tournaments at Waikanae and Tawa for all our wrestlers to get a taste of competing in a fun environment and with shared kai and games following the wrestles.

National tournaments are also on the calendar and 3 of our wrestlers travelled to the National Secondary Schools tournament in Auckland. Nate George, (Palmerston North Boys High School), Duncan Allen-Alloway (Kuranui) and Angus Read (Rathkeale) all winning medals and Nate was also awarded the Cadet Male category’s “Most Scientific Wrestler” award for his use of multiple techniques.

This is very much down to the training by Nate George, (Palmerston North Boys High School), Duncan Allen-Alloway (Kuranui) and Angus Read (Rathkeale), who puts in hours of work and chaperoned the boys all the way North.  Jeremy also stood in for former Featherston club wrestler Seb Hopkins (Wellington College) who also won gold in his weight class.

Next up on the national calendar is the National Champs in Gore, where 4 of our wrestlers will compete over 2 days in early October. Best of luck to the competitors!

Our trainings will continue all term and it’s never too late to try something new.  With this gap in sports seasons perhaps the values and fitness of wrestling is just what your kids need.  The junior classes are on Wednesday evenings at 5.30 with Senior classes on Sundays at 12.30.  For more information please contact featherstonamateurwrestling@gmail.com

A special thanks to Trust House for their support in funding the materials for our new roof that was put on over the last month.    The old gym hasn’t been this watertight for years!

Women’s Squash team win Wellington ‘Super Champs tournament’

September 12, 2022 September 2022, Sports Comments Off on Women’s Squash team win Wellington ‘Super Champs tournament’

The Martinborough Squash E-Grade Women’s team recently won the Wellington regional interclub ‘Super Champs’ tournament, earning them a place to represent Wellington at the National E-Grade ‘Super-Champs’ in Alexander in October.

The Wellington tournament was held at the Upper Hutt Squash club in late July. First up Martinborough took on Thorndon and dropped only one match to win the tie 4 matches to 1. That took them through to effectively a final against Mana who had also beaten Thorndon the day before.  Martinborough stepped it up a gear and won all 5 matches against Mana to book a spot in the Nationals as the Wellington regions representative.

The team is a mix of youth and experience, with up-and-coming stars Sophie Sweeney, Christina Kirkup, Gabby Nicholson, and Emily Goodman all continuing the good form they have shown coming through the junior tournaments. They were led by Sarah Clout and Katie Rees who have come back to the game and provided a great experience to the younger players. … Continue Reading
