Featherston Wrestling Club

August 2, 2022 August 2022, Sports Comments Off on Featherston Wrestling Club

June saw the start of Regional & National wrestling tournaments.  The Wellington Regional Championships is back on the national calendar after 31 years.  This illustrates the growth in the Wellington region clubs – Featherston, Tawa and Waikanae.

The club also had a team travel to Hamilton in July to attend the North Island Championships earning 8 medals.  Martinborough local Nate George was in the medals at both tournaments.

Senior team members were then able to attend a national training camp at Lake Karapiro for 2 days of intensive training with the national coaching team.

A special thanks to Adamsons Mobil Service Station in Featherston for their help with travel costs to all these tournaments. Their support means our coaches and kids can travel, often long distances, to compete. … Continue Reading

Roll the Jack

Club president Rozzana Muriwai.

With Rozanna Muriwai, as the new president of the Martinborough Bowling Club, the Club is humming.

“When we returned from Bahrain 2 years ago, we wandered down to the Bowling Green to check it out. Both my husband and I love bowling, says Rozanna. We joined. The social side of bowls was strong, but there were only around 6 competitive playing members.

“We realised to make the club financial and competitive we had to invest and start making changes. The cost of a new green was $15,500. Council provided a grant of $4,500 and the club covered the remainder. But with the green out of action we do have a dilemma. Social bowl nights have been postponed in the interim which impacts on our financial situation. We are presently fundraising to boost the coffers.

“Even so full-time membership has grown, as have social bowler numbers. Martinborough members are still competing in local and regional competitions and practising on other club’s greens in the meantime. This season we hope to have around 40 full playing members and over 100 social twilight bowls players.  Twilight bowls will hopefully start in the new year and new players are always welcome. … Continue Reading

Rare mother – daughter success at South Wairarapa Karate Club

December 9, 2021 December 2021, Sports Comments Off on Rare mother – daughter success at South Wairarapa Karate Club

The South Wairarapa Okinawan Goju Ryu karate club is continuing to grow in both numbers and achievements, and it was great to see two Martinborough locals recently achieve their Shodan (blackbelts) in September this year.

Mother and daughter, Clare and Bonnie Miller,  travelled to Dunedin with Senpai Anna Borjesson and training partner Rhys Amos (Greytown Dojo), to undertake their 3 day training and grading on 24-26 September.  A mother – daughter achieving their Shodan together, is something very special and not very common.  Bonnie is among the youngest to achieve junior Shodan  at the age of 13.

Bonnie started karate at age 7 and it has been a personal journey, training 5-7 hrs a week.  Bonnie says “I love karate.  It has become my way of life and achieving my Shodan makes me want to keep on training hard” “it helps me gain confidence, strength and self defence, whilst making lots of friends”.

Both are members of the Martinborough dojo, which still trains in the Martinborough school hall, established in 1970s by Sensei John Whitby.  Sensei Paul Cantwell,  chief instructor of the South Wairarapa club, is very proud of Bonnie and Clare and their dedication and commitment to karate. “This definitely played a huge part in them both achieving their Black belts.  For a mother and daughter promoted to Black belt together, is something they will never forget”

Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do Wairarapa Inc offers trainings four nights a week 6.30-8pm: Mondays in Greytown at Kuranui College

Tuesdays in Martinborough School Hall. Martinborough also have a junior training 5.30-6.25pm.

Wednesdays in Featherston at Te Kura o Paetūmokai Featherston School

Thursdays in Carterton at South End School

Sibling Rivalry

December 9, 2021 December 2021, Sports Comments Off on Sibling Rivalry

Anna Possenniskie (left) and Debbie Donaldson.

It’s not often that two members of the same family compete for the winning place in the Womens’ Silver Golf Championships. But that is just what took place at the Martinborough Golf Club Sunday 7th November.  Debbie Donaldson and Anna Posseniskie, the daughters of Viv and Martin Napier, went head on to compete for the win.

In the first half Debbie was in command with a score of 79 against Annas 83.  Debbie began the second half two up.

But after lunch Anna began to make a comeback. Tension increased. The atmosphere was electric.  But Debbie was not giving up without a fight.   She squared a few holes and won another.  A deviant drive, a missed chip through a slip of concentration and an unfortunate position down the bank on the 16th allowed Anna to finally win the game on the 34th hole.  It was a nail -biting finish and hard won.

On examining the gross scores there was little in it.   The first half Debbie was 79 and Anna 83. In the second half Anna was 78 and Debbie was 83.                                                                                                                          Both girls played below their handicaps. Anna has a handicap of 7 and Debbie 8.

Afterwards Anna was thrilled with her win but shed a few tears because she really did not want to beat her little sister.  Then there were warm hugs all round proving beyond a doubt that sibling rivalry can have a harmonious outcome.
