Celebrations at First Church Martinborough

August 8, 2016 August 2016, Regular Features No Comments

Past and present, with our dreaming, join to make us what we are:
Ancient wisdom, ancient follies have shaped the way we love and care:
Give us reverence and wisdom, from the past – for life today.
We are mindful of the present – every force, each strength or flaw
Free us from those selfish motives which can consume us more and more
Give us the vision and the courage – for this modern age of change

On Sunday, August 7th we will celebrate 159 years of Presbyterian presence in the South Wairarapa, 145 years since First Church began and 125 years since the present church building was opened and dedicated. There will be a special church service at 10am. with thanksgiving and recollections of earlier years, and importantly we will be looking ahead to see how we can continue to be a relevant and effective presence in the community. Our current minister Dr Jim Veitch will be joined by Rev. Richard Ward who grew up in Martinborough, and with his family attended First Church.

This will be followed by lunch in our 100 year old hall. If you have had a connection with First Church – through baptism or marriage, attended Sunday School or Bible Class, or have been a member of our church family, we warmly invite you to join us.

To assist with catering, please contact Mary Smith – 06 306 9594
There are plans to produce a booklet which will tell the history of the First Church through its buildings, recording the names of Ministers, office bearers and faithful members and provide a record of the varied activities and events of past years.

We feel this will be a valuable project and helpful as we think about how to adjust to the years ahead.
