From the mayor

Communication is one of the most important functions in Council’s day to day operations.  It also an area where SWDC has copped a lot of criticism in recent times.

There is no doubt that with the advent of social media and smart phones that the rules have changed around how Council shares its information with the public.  People are no longer prepared to wait for the quarterly rates newsletter to find out what’s going on.  Even though Council currently uses at least fourteen different information sharing  options we are still censured for not keeping the public informed.

While there is obviously some responsibility on residents to read information available, Council accepts that we need to do the very best we can to keep residents updated.  Communications are a priority for us for 2016 and to spearhead this we have employed a Communications Manager.

Our aim is to ensure that we communicate effectively at every level, from the individual resident through to large entities like the District Health Board or other councils.  We will also be investigating new ways of getting our message across and getting your feedback on issues.

If however you still prefer the traditional ways of getting our information, like newspapers, radio and letters; don’t worry, they are still here to stay for the foreseeable future.
