From the Mayor

August 8, 2016 August 2016, Regular Features No Comments

The local body elections are nearing and so is the time for me to hang up my hat as the district’s mayor.  It will be with some sadness that I hand over the reins but also with pride knowing that South Wairarapa District Council is in great shape.

Financially the organisation is very sound. Tight budgeting controls requested by council and implemented by CEO Paul Crimp have led to
replenished reserves. Major infrastructure is future proofed and generally our amenities are in good order. Of course there are always things to do and challenges to face but this council is well placed to handle these.

It is also fitting to thank all Councillors for their dedication and hard work. In the twelve years that I have headed the table, SWDC has never been beset with the bickering and self-promotion seen so often in politics. Everyone has always worked for the general good and that has made for pleasant and often humorous meetings.

Differences of opinion, while common, have never progressed into arguments or vendettas.

Newly elected councillors may be surprised at the constraints a council must work within and just how much support they need from their
colleagues to get things done.

With 5 councillors retiring as well, several people have indicated they are putting their hands up for election.  That is a good thing as it shows
people care about their community. When however, you choose who you’d like to serve you for the next three years, please remember that they will inherit a healthy, sound council and it didn’t get that way by good luck.
