Fun in the Afternoons

May 9, 2017 May 2017 No Comments

Fun-in-the-afternoons Most afternoons after school St Andrew’s, 41 Dublin Street, is buzzing with happy children, thanks to The Homework Club and the volunteers who make it happen. The Club offers children not only help with homework but also a place to play, relax and interact with friendly, supportive adults.

Each child spends one-on-one time with a volunteer who takes them through the work set by their teacher, to enhance their literacy and numeracy.
It’s not all schoolwork though. There are plenty of fun activities to give the children a broader range of life skills. “We are an enrichment programme”, explains Coordinator Anne Hannah. They cook food, play games, do puzzles, make models and generally socialise. Charlie and Toby, Anne’s two little dogs are honorary members of the club.
The children also learn the piano. Vicky Jones, who is their volunteer teacher, would love to have another piano player to help. “Music is so important for brain development but at the moment I can only spend a little bit of time with each child”.
Maureen O’Connor has been helping at the club for the past two years. “It’s so rewarding to see the children blossom. I like the way it creates new community connections for both the children and the volunteers. I would recommend it to anyone.”
Anne says, “We are so grateful to the members of the community who give their time to help. We’d love to hear from you if you’d like to become involved in this rewarding opportunity. You don’t need special qualifications, just an interest in helping children and some spare time in the afternoon”.
The Club operates under the auspices of St Andrew’s Anglican church but is non-denominational. No religious affiliation is expected or required. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Anne Hannah for more details. Email darring@paradise.net.nz or call 022 075 9807.
