Kahutara on the attack.

The Kahutara School 1st X1 Hockey team have had a great start to the season. Despite the loss of seven Year 8 students to college, and long time coach Karl Rippey at the end of last season, the young team are performing very well in the competitive 2nd grade of Wairarapa Primary and Intermediate age hockey.

A number of the players in the team have only just starting playing hockey this year and others have stepped up from playing 6 aside hockey. With draws against Hadlow, Dalefield and Chanel, a narrow 2-1 loss to Gladstone 1st XI, and a 4-2 win over Coasties, their new Coach is extremely proud of the team.
The group are working very well as a team, with some great passing and brilliant team goals as a result. The children are young, ranging from Year 5 to Year 8, so with a few more years of hockey under their belt, they’ll develop into very good hockey players.

The team practices fortnightly on the turf at Kuranui College, thanks to a generous donation. Practicing on a proper turf is invaluable in building the skill level of the team. Other practices are held in the Kahutara School hall with high jump mats behind the goalie to protect the walls from flying hockey balls!
The team has one more game coming up against neighbours Martinborough before the school holidays. This should prove to be a very competitive match.
