How about wearing odd shoes for a day – we had a great opportunity on 11th September to raise money for Camp Quality by wearing odd shoes.  Unfortunately I forgot about it and just had my usual unusual shoes on.  It did make me think about what other shoe days might be around though and several popped up.

There is “Two different coloured shoes day” on 3 May, “Wear brown shoes day” on 4 December, “Put on your own shoes day” (perhaps more for kids) on 6 Dec, “Red shoe day” on 25th July  and “One day without shoes day” on 21 May.

Whew – fortunately most of them are to raise money for charity and I particularly favour “Red shoe day”, partly because red shoes are a favourite of mine, but also as it is in remembrance of those lost to Fibromyalgia, ME and other “invisible illnesses” such as Lyme.  In researching this I was surprised to find that “Around 300 million people in the world today are so impoverished that they cannot afford shoes”.  What a frightening thought.

I know we do have a problem in NZ because of the “KidsCan” charity ads on the television but can’t understand why we have that sort of poverty – it should not be like that.  At least KidsCan is trying to help.  But back to shoes.  We had our “Bling a shoe” day at Martinborough Library last week and had just the right number of children waving glue and glitter around.  Some amazing shoe deigns came out of that – what talented, creative children are out there.

Next holidays we will do it again I hope.  Thanks to the volunteer helpers on the day and also for the shoe and bling donations to run the session.  Martinborough Library is now getting a fair share of shoe visitors from tour buses and cruise ship passengers – it’s great as we are getting to meet more people from all over the world.  Come down and see the ever-expanding shoe collection but please don’t tell my husband that I am still buying shoes!
