Library newsIt is definitely the time to go on holiday to somewhere nice and warm, with lots of sun, a blue swimming pool and a lazy drink. For those of you heading off soon to a warm climate to escape the weather then our envious thoughts go with you. While I was on my holiday last week to Fiji (had to get that in there!), I read 14 books – one per day.  What a wonderful treat. As Librarians do, I lurked around the pool looking at the covers of everyone’s books to see what they were reading.

The list of popular swimming pool reading was: I am pilgrim by Terry Hayes; I shall wear midnight by Terry Pratchett; Aviation medicine by Ross Ewing (that’s a different one); Me before you by JoJo Moyes (this is currently the most popular book in the US); The lubetkin legacy by Marina Lewycka (can’t wait to read that one myself) and a few of the old reliable David Baldacci and James Patterson.

There were also quite a few Kobo/Kindle Ereaders about but my lurking skills were not good enough to find out what books were being read.  I had taken 10 books with me, all from our library sales trolley, and I subsequently donated them to the ‘library’ at the resort (all 4 drawers of it).

It is a great way to take holiday reading as you don’t have to fill up the suitcase with them for the return journey.  Most of the books were of the crime or young adult variety but there was a great Judy Nunn book called Kal which I can recommend if you like Australian outback generational family stories.

Overall my favourite book was Please look after mother by Kyong-Suk Sin.  The story is set in South Korea and follows the efforts of a family to find the mother who went missing from Seoul Station and their sobering realizations when they recall memories that suggest she may not have been happy.

Now that I have returned from holiday and am settling back into the library, you will see dozens of new books coming through. We are, of course, now into the new financial year and book shopping is high on my agenda. Do come in and have a look at the new selection and if you have asked me to buy a book specially for you in the last few months, then it may well be here waiting for you.  Roll on spring and enjoy what is left of winter in the meantime.
