Library-newsWhat a great start to the New Year.  We had 84 children finish in the Summer Reading Programme.  This involves the children reading four books and then talking to Janet about them.  For each book finished a small prize is given and each finisher receives an invite to our party finale.
This year Zappo entertained at the ANZAC hall and was his usual fantastic self.  The Eastern and Central Community Trust sponsored the entire reading programme again and we are so grateful to them for doing so.  The programme really encourages children to read and we have seen some real improvements in literacy amongst the children.  Literacy is one of the things that libraries are here for and our children’s library area is really important to us and to all those families that use it.

The new Waihinga Centre is on track and I have now started to fund raise for some of the furniture we need to go in the children’s area.  Idea number 1 is to make and sell cloth book bags.  This is already underway in the library but we have run out of bags already.  I am getting on and making some more myself but any help from keen sewers would be most welcome.  I can provide material if you can sew them.
If you would like to help but can’t sew or don’t have a machine, don’t despair – on Tuesday 21st February from 10-12 we are having a sewing bee in the library with an expert sewer showing us what to do.  There will be a few spare machines available.  Come along for a bit of fun – oh, there may even be cake!
Another event we are planning is Te Reo lessons for adults, let us know if you are interested.  Now, in the past I have had enquiries about forming a Friends of the Library association.  This will happen in the near future so please let me know if you are interested in getting involved.
One last thing, our free wifi (Martinborough Library and APNK) is being extended in range.  I won’t know until it is fitted but it may well cover most of the town centre – Yay.  Signing off for now, enjoy Summer, if it ever arrives and do come and see us with your novel fundraising ideas.  Shirley

Annabelle de Groot and Janet enjoy a quiet read during the holiday reading programme. Janet had created the setting for this year’s theme ‘at the beach’.
