Martinborough Golf Club

July 25, 2016 July 2016, Sports No Comments

The course is finally starting to play more like winter golf, with a lot less run on the fairway and no run if you miss the fairway! Members handicaps are starting to settle, with a number of members’ lowest-ever handicaps this summer creeping back out again.

The Ladies 18 Hole Open Day held on Friday 3 June was a great success. The course was literally sparkling as a light frost greeted a field of 60 players from  Carterton, Pahiatua, Shandon, Miramar, Masterton, Riversdale Beach, Judgeford, Napier, Dannevirke, Kapiti, Karori, Manor Park, Boulcott Heritage Farm and 19 of our own members from Martinborough. Excitingly the overall winner was relatively new Martinborough member, Louise Smith with a Nett 66. She shot a personal best of 94 off the stick, and won the Sherry Weatherstone Best Nett Cup for her efforts.

The Marquis Shield Wairarapa Men’s Interclub team performed very well this year, but unfortunately weren’t able to beat Mahunga in final round on June 12 at Featherston. Maybe next year will be our turn guys?
On Thursday 16 June the club successfully hosted round 10 of the Wellington Women’s 9-Hole Interclub competition. The competition consists of 12 clubs from all over the Wellington region, including clubs from as far afield as Paraparaumu, Kapiti and Karori. The Martinborough team had one of their best rounds of this year’s competition, scoring 2 ½ points out of a possible 4, with wins from Billie Holmes and Mary Herrick and a ½ from Gaylene Selby-Neal.

Congratulations to Ju Allen who scored a hole-in-one on the 9th hole at Riversdale Beach during their recent tournament. Ju joins the very few golfers who had recorded the perfect 1 score on the card for that hole.
All club days are being well attended. Thursday Club is getting more popular each week, with close to 50 golfers turning up most weeks. Junior tees have recently been put out on the course (the red tees), and a number of Junior members have recently joined the club.

If you are interested in playing golf, albeit 9 Hole, 18 Hole, Junior memberships, or just casually, please contact Sue Berger our Secretary/Manager.
