MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

March 15, 2017 March 2017, Regular Features, Sports No Comments

It was close but Rookie Justin Morris wasn’t too fazed with not breaking or equalling the course record held by Lance Phelps after securing his first win as a Professional at the the 2017 Invitational Spark Pro Am at Martinborough recently. The field of 43 PGA professionals were highly complimentary of the course and the progress in upgrading our greens though a number did stumbled with our Par 3’s with very few managing to birdie them.

Morris, teeing off first thing took full advantage of the calm conditions scoring 10 birdies, paring  the 4 Par 3’s, the only blip came on his last hole when he bogeyed the 18th. to record his Gross 63. This score was three shots clear of the three way tie in second place to Wesley Jeon who eagled Numbers 1 and 2, though bogeyed the par 3’s 12 and 16.

Harry Bateman was relaxed and soaking up the atmosphere from the get go. Birding numbers 1-6, helped to cushion the bogeys on number 15 and 16 before he regained his composure and birdied 17 finishing with a fine Par on 18. Trevor Marshall returned a solid performance of  5 birdies and 11 pars, an eagle on number 1 and a sole bogey on the 7th to join this group.

The Teams Section was won by The Girls – Alison Sim, Emily Loughnan and  Mariana McDermott  who each won a round of golf at Cape Kidnappers plus a room each at Wine Country Lodge Havelock North for their efforts amassing 99 stable ford points on a c/b to Martinborough Hotel sponsored Yellow Ball Challenge, where you have to keep the yellow ball in play was won by Karen Stephens, Bill Jones and  Liam Annis, Thanks to the very generous local sponsors the prize table for the teams went down to 15 packages.

A stunning Martinborough summer day of old was matched by a fantastic turn out of 86 in the field for our Main Opening Day tournament  over Waiting Weekend. The members thankful of the magnificent trees that line the course which provided respite from the searing heat.

The Golf was fun, however the highlight of the day was undoubtedly having Stephen Walsh entertain after dinner for the best part of three hours.  The young Irishman is pretty tidy with the guitar and had the Clubhouse rocking, the likes of which has not be seen for many years. Stephen is also a very talented golfer, ranked number 4 in the Wellington Region. Thanks for a very memorable evening.

Random draw for team Ambrose was won by Ro Griffith, Jenny Tosswill, Paul Harris and Bruce Ward Nett 55.625 , 2nd Liam Annis, Shane Hartnell, Lyle Griffiths and Rick Thompson with Nett 55.75 3rd Captain Bill Crook, Muso Stephen Walsh (RW),Venetia Morison and Robbie Pierse (RW) 55.875 on a c/b to 4th Malcolm Wood, Terry Fraei, Tom Bunny and Di Bunny, 5th Ian Stewart, Ray Matthews, Rosie Collins and Jo Loe Nett 56.375.

The carpark raffle to raise funds for works around the course was drawn, congrats to Raymond and Susie Mathews winning the Club Captains carpark & Mike Hatrick the Presidents.

The Men have got off to a flying start competing in Division 7 Linnell Cup, leading the table after the first 3 rounds with wins of 12/3 against Otaki, 13/2 over Te Maura and 10/5 over Carterton.

The Womens inter club has had a delayed start due to precipitation  and gale force winds with the Silver Pennants fixture at Miramar being rescheduled and torrential rain for the first round of Tilson Salver at Castlepoint being almost abandoned. Fortunately good weather has been equalled by good numbers on Wednesdays, with a reminder to the 18 holers to be prompt with getting your disc into the draw by 9am.

The Club  co hosts the WGI Womens 36 hole Open on Saturday 18th March and the Julie Murphy Jug – Wellington  v Wairarapa Women on Sunday 19th March , you are all welcome to come along to see the up and coming young guns and seasoned gals compete.
