With work well underway to kick off Stage One of the project it is time to turn our minds back to fundraising. The Waihinga Charitable Trust recently called in the first round of pledges, totalling in the region of $550,000 in the first year. Thanks to the generosity of our community we have already received well over $300,000 of those funds. The remainder of the pledged money is due to come in over the next two to four years.

The cattle drive is also now up and running and farmers are donating their livestock. We expect more of these animals to come in over the next three years. Many thanks to Felicity Warren and Ju Allen for co-ordinating this project with the help of with Bridget Mathewson and Kiri Elworthy.

One of the last major events to be held in the hall will be a ‘Cockies n’Frockies’ fundraiser. We will keep you posted on details for what promises to be a very entertaining evening. A community carnival including the turning of the turf and blessing of the hall will be held before work begins in earnest. Look out for next month’s Star and follow our “Friends of the Waihinga Centre project” Facebook page for more information on these events.

We would welcome ideas and offers of help for our fundraising events. Every contribution, big or small, is gratefully appreciated. If you would like get involved with fundraising for this exciting new community facility, or wish to make a pledge or donation, please contact Victoria Read on 0272 271 252 or e-mail victoria@victoriaread.co.nz.

Your Questions Answered

What will SWDC do if the build quote is over budget?
SWDC is undertaking ‘early contractor involvement’ (ECI) and this methodology forms the basis of how the project will be carried out and costs managed.

The ECI process revolves around identifying and selecting contractors at an early stage based on ‘schedule of rates’ pricing.
Quantity Surveyors, Rawlinson’s have undertaken significant quantity survey work already, and as a result of this costs of the construction have been clearly identified.

SWDC also has a substantial contingency budget in place for this project.

When will it be finished?
Construction is expected to start in July 2016 and is projected to be complete in October 2017. Timelines may change as factors outside of SWDC’s control (such as weather) can impact the rate of construction. As the project progresses, the timeline will be communicated in more detail.

Supporter Profile – Susan Stephen

‘Sold by Susan’ signs pop up all over the Village – that’s because since 2002 when she and her late husband John returned to Martinborough, she has been helping people buy and sell property here and throughout the South Wairarapa.

From her perspective, Martinborough’s strong sense of community is key part of its charm but at the moment important amenities are scattered around the Village. She sees the concept of a central hub, connected to the Square, creating a whole new way for people to get together. For instance it will be great for young families to have the playground, Plunket and the Library linked.

The new centre, with its upgraded hall and modern facilities is also likely to be more attractive not just to locals but also to other organisations wanting a venue for functions or to stage events which in turn brings more people to the Village.
