A very hard working couple
At the Martinborough Dairy Hari and Hema Patel worked hard to support their loyal customers base. Their usual staff were not able to work during the lockdown so they carried the whole load themselves with some help from Hamish, their 13 year old son. Hari worked out the back keeping the stock moving while Hema served the customers. It was a very busy time with bread always sold out by mid-morning and high demand for other staples.
It was a worrying time for them though as it was difficult to get masks and hand sanitiser.
On the plus side they found the community spirit really inspiring. “Our customers were good about keeping a distance but I noticed that people talked to each other much more, sharing stories and advice about the situation. Martinborough people are definitely special. We’ve working in other parts of New Zealand but here they really care about you. Lots of people asked us how we were doing. You don’t get that in other places.”
