Alpha for All

February 11, 2019 February 2019 No Comments

Starting on Wednesday 13th February St Andrew’s Anglican church will be running an Alpha Course at St Andrew’s Church hall over a period of nine weeks.  Alpha is free for anyone in Martinborough to attend and I would be grateful if you would run a news story in your February edition of the Martinborough Star.  I’ve outlined some details below:

Alpha will start on Wednesday 13th February at 6:30pm at St Andrew’s church hall, 41 Dublin Street, Martinborough.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation.

Food

Alpha will start with a meal because it’s a great way to build community and get to know each other.

Then a Talk

The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Around thirty minutes long and delivered over nine weeks, they will be given as a live talk or played as a video. They will explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions from Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith? to Why and how do I pray? and How does God guide us?

Followed by Discussion

Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything and there’s nothing you can’t say (seriously). It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment.

There is NO charge for Alpha, it is free to attend however we do ask that you book your place so that we can plan the catering – tim@roachs.info or call/text: Tim 021 348895

History – About Alpha

Alpha was started in 1977 by the Reverend Charles Marnham, a curate at Holy Trinity Brompton, a Church of England parish in London. It started as a course for church members regarding the basics of beliefs commonly held by many believers in Christ but then began to be used as an introduction for those interested in the faith.

Alpha grew rapidly in Britain in the 1990’s. In 2018, the Alpha website described the course as running in over 100 countries and over 100 languages, with over 24 million people having taken the course. Courses have been run by Anglican, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches.
