Hands up who know where the Bay of Bengal is. The Bay of Bengal’s basin contains some of the most populous regions of the earth. No less than a quarter of the world’s population is concentrated in the eight countries that border the bay. Approximately 200 million people live along the Bay of Bengal’s coasts and of these a major proportion are partially or wholly dependent on its fisheries.


At the same time the bay’s ecosystems are also being disrupted by other environmental pressures. Several large rivers empty into the bay, carrying vast tides of untreated sewage, plastic, industrial waste and effluent from the agriculture and aquaculture industries14. … Continue Reading

Grandpa Thomas Evan came to Martinborough in 1878 and established a saddlery business. He and his family had a nine room house behind the shop. This was burned down while they were at a farm at Pukio. Stables behind the house were used by farmers on race days etc.
My mother remembers as a small girl watching her mother planting a sycamore tree which still stands,. That would have been around 1896.

Living across from the Club Hotel they saw a lot of ‘goings on’ there. When there was a fight Grandma would close the windows so the swearing couldn’t be heard. If a man became to obstreperous he was dumped in the nearby horse trough. … Continue Reading

Here’s an early reminder that this great annual event is coming up. It’s time for all the budding chefs to start thinking about the fabulous dish you will enter this year. And make your plans to get out there hunting, fishing and gathering for the ingredients.
The Cook Off will be held at the Tuturumuri Community Hall , White Rock Road on the 20th May. The event is a major fundraiser for Tututumuri School who are keen to get as many entries as possible.

The judging categories will be for meals made with:
Home grown produce.
Best paua fritter
Other seafood
Wild game
Home grown meats
And an open desert category.

All categories are open to both adults and children and will be judged accordingly. Remember that the main ingredient of the dish needs to be grown, caught , farmed or hunted locally, and needs to be served bite sized.

Entries will soon be open so get your thinking caps on and make sure your of your plans to be out there hunting, fishing and gathering.
Everybody is welcome to come and enjoy the resulting food, it is sure to once again be an evening of gastronomic delights. So mark your calendar on Saturday May 20th . Entry adults $20, children $10, family $50.

Cross Creek Railway’s Friday Night 3rd March was a magnificent night to ride the rail. The Engine Shed rocked to the noise of over 19 train drivers who were there to receive their 2017/2019 train driving licence.
