Living off the Land…
On Friday, we used potatoes grown in the school garden to make hot chips. We also brought things along from home from our gardens to share like lettuce. Anna gave us some home made tomato sauce, some tomatoes and cucumber. We had sausages and hot chips and salad with bread. Next time we will try and borrow a bread maker. It was fun and everyone helped to do something.

Coal-loving Wyoming legislators are pushing a bill to outlaw wind and solar.
On the first day of the state’s 2017 legislative session, nine Republican lawmakers filed legislation that would bar utilities from using electricity produced by large-scale renewable energy projects.
The bill, whose sponsors are primarily from the state’s top coal-producing counties, would require utilities to use only approved energy sources like coal, natural gas, nuclear power, hydroelectric, and oil. While individual homeowners and small businesses could still use rooftop solar or backyard wind, utilities would face steep fines if they served up clean energy.
The MYSTERY of … MONEY
We all know what money is and does. According to a song, it makes the world go round. If you have some; it will line your pockets or more commonly, burn a hole in them. It can slip through your fingers at the drop of a hat – the one that’s passed around, that is.
Money’s been with us for yonks, but our concept of it has changed. For a start, it was any object which had a certain value which could be used to ‘pay’ for something useful. The marvellous Cookbook “Tastes From Martinborough” has been a runaway success!
Produced by the Wharekaka Auxiliary, to raise funds to provide hospital level care at Wharekaka Rest Home, the book has been enthusiastically embraced by locals and visitors alike and has quickly sold out of its’ 1000 copy print run.
Generous support from local businesses and donors meant that the production costs were fully met, allowing the full purchase price of the book to go to the fundraising effort. At $45 per copy this means that a whopping $45,000 has been able to be donated to Wharekaka.
This is an enormous help to the initial set up costs of the HLC project, a service which will allow people to remain in Martinborough should they require a higher level of care than was previously available at Wharekaka. Not only rest home but hospice and palliative level. The upgrade has now been implemented and has already proved successful and necessary . … Continue Reading
