A look behind the safety fence

The Waihinga Centre building work is going well and we took a peek behind the fence at progress.

A Generous Donation

When Susan Stephen found herself with a brand new safety trampoline that she didn’t need she decided to give it to the Fundraising Committee of the Waihinga Centre, to help raise money for Stage 2 of the development – the playground and park.   The trampoline was raffled and raised over $600.

Susan’s generous gift has helped the community in more ways than one. Most importantly it’s raised a useful sum of money to go towards work on the new playground for all children to enjoy.  It’s also going to put a smile on the faces of the lucky children who get to use it at home.

The trampoline’s new owner?   It’s Kim Hayes from Greytown, who bought the winning ticket at the Te Kairanga Farmers’ Market. Foley Family Wines approached the fundraising team last year to donate proceeds generated from the Te Kairanga Market to the project, they also generously made a stall available to the Waihinga Centre fundraising team. … Continue Reading

Experience a distinctive feature of Martinborough Music Festival

April 10, 2018 April 2018 Comments Off on Experience a distinctive feature of Martinborough Music Festival

28-30 September

An astonishing statistic of this year’s Festival is that there is some 200 years collective playing experience between the six musicians. Yes, that’s right. These musicians began learning to play their instruments during their preschool years. They are all in demand for their performance skills.

Canadian born pianist, Diedre Irons, began tinkling away on the piano when she was three years old. Following formal lessons, Ms Irons made her debut as a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra playing the Schumann Concerto in A Minor. She was 12 years old.

After her graduation from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Ms Irons was in demand as a soloist, in concert, as a recitalist and as a member of renowned chamber ensembles. In 1977, she came to New Zealand and established herself as one of our distinguished performing musicians. In 1989, she was awarded an MBE and in 2011, an ONZM for services to music. … Continue Reading

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

April 10, 2018 April 2018 Comments Off on MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

It is great to see the return of an annual fixture between Martinborough and Karori GC, the re kindling of friendships playing for the prestigious ANZ Cup, which back in the day was played on an annual basis between our two Clubs.

It’s been a  long time between drinks break and the finding of the Cup put into the back of a cupboard for safe keeping.

Karori generously offered to host, their team of thirty six players and for our part, nine lads ventured over to represent us on a warm brilliant sunny day.

The Cups result is based on the best five stableford scores from both teams which went the way of the Hosts, though not by a huge margin considering the odds with Stableford scores totalling 186 and 171 respectively.

However, the individual competition was won by Guy Walmsley, Martinboroughs Committee member and new appointed Club Captain also an ex-Karori GC Club Captain with 41 points. 2nd was Mike Cox with 39 points and 3rd placed was Dick Adam with 38 points.
Two’s weIre won by Sheldon Mc Namara of MGC with an Eagle putt on hole 12, par 4. His drive landed on the green with the help of Victor from KGC because he stopped the ball from rolling well past the hole while preparing to putt for his bogey. He did not complain of being hit by the team behind because he hoped to be compensated with a drink at the clubhouse.
Other two’s were won by Jerry Barber, Dave Cullen and Malcolm Bridge of MGC. … Continue Reading

The demolition of the Martinborough Golf Club is complete.
