Hau Ariki Marae, Our Community Marae
In 2018 the Hau Ariki Marae needed a makeover. The Martinborough community rose to the occasion. People helped to paint. They cleaned and undertook repairs. Helpers in the wharekai kept everyone fed and in good spirits. And to record the event Marae DIY filmed the result. It was a superb demonstration of how the community can work together for a common cause.
Hau Ariki is in many ways quite unique as a marae for the whole community. Built in the 1980’s following a collaboration with the council, it was established for Māori and Pakeha alike, where traditional Māori concepts, values and conventions could be nurtured and cultivated.
