Graham Higginson

August 8, 2016 August 2016 Comments Off on Graham Higginson

Graham HigginsonI was born in Featherston and educated locally. I have always been a keen sportsman, playing rugby for both Martinborough and Tuhirangi (Pirinoa). and coaching Wairarapa age grade hockey. Family followed sports and Trish my wife and I now have a blended family of 7 children and 13 grandchildren.

For the last 40 years I have been self-employed. Working pre-dominantly in the primary industry I have been farming and shearing, fishing and pest controller. My most commercial endeavour during this time employed 40 staff nationally. This has developed a real hands-on love of the environment and a passion for its care and protection. I believe the district offers huge developmental opportunities by managed utilisation of environment in both primary and tourism. … Continue Reading

Library newsIt is definitely the time to go on holiday to somewhere nice and warm, with lots of sun, a blue swimming pool and a lazy drink. For those of you heading off soon to a warm climate to escape the weather then our envious thoughts go with you. While I was on my holiday last week to Fiji (had to get that in there!), I read 14 books – one per day.  What a wonderful treat. As Librarians do, I lurked around the pool looking at the covers of everyone’s books to see what they were reading.  … Continue Reading

From the Mayor

August 8, 2016 August 2016, Regular Features Comments Off on From the Mayor

The local body elections are nearing and so is the time for me to hang up my hat as the district’s mayor.  It will be with some sadness that I hand over the reins but also with pride knowing that South Wairarapa District Council is in great shape.

Financially the organisation is very sound. Tight budgeting controls requested by council and implemented by CEO Paul Crimp have led to
replenished reserves. Major infrastructure is future proofed and generally our amenities are in good order. Of course there are always things to do and challenges to face but this council is well placed to handle these. … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …

Martinborough Golf Club has tumbled down

The demolition of the Martinborough Golf Club is complete. In the last days prior to Christmas a fully-insulated pole shed, much like a top end farm outbuilding, was erected to act as both office and temporary clubhouse. New septic tanks, internet connectivity, power, water, and Porticom loos were installed. On …
