OUR GENEROUS COMMUNITY

Good food is so important for well-being, and at Wharekaka we have been able to make nourishing meals even better with the aid of our new bain-marie.

Thanks to the Wharekaka Auxiliary, the bain-marie has been installed in the dining room to ensure that our meals are served hot and tasty. Serving from the dining room also allows individual portions to be tailored to how much our residents would like to eat.

It is just one example of our Wharekaka philosophy of personalised resident-centred care. This is what makes us different from the larger, more institutionalised aged care residential homes. It is our motto of ‘caring country living’ in practice.

Another particular friend that we want to acknowledge publicly is Ray Sparks, a long-time Martinborough resident who has given us a wonderful clock. This gorgeous clock now sits in the Didsbury Lounge and is bringing much pleasure as well as the correct time to our residents.

We would also like to publicly thank Foley Wines and Te Kairanga Vineyard for their generous donation of the last two years of Farmers’ Market stallholder fees to Wharekaka. We are very grateful for their assistance and for being their community charity of choice.

Foley Wines CEO, Mark Turnbull, said, “We’re pleased to support Wharekaka Rest Home in their fundraising efforts. The Summer Farmers’ Markets at Te Kairanga are a wonderful occasion for many local producers and members of the community to come together. We are grateful for the ongoing support from both stallholders and visitors for these important community projects.”

We cannot thank our generous community enough for their contributions to making our residents’ lives special.

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF CLUB REPORT

August 7, 2020 August 2020 Comments Off on MARTINBOROUGH GOLF CLUB REPORT

July has been rather a washout with the Ladies and Thursday Club suffering the most.

Grumpies started the month off with a good turnout of 27 players with Brian Russo leading the way with 39 points followed by Malcolm Bridge on 37 and Pete Halstead on 35.  There were a number of two’s, namely Terry Blacktop, Alan Yates, Pete Price, Brian Russo and Pete Halstead.

The Ladies had a very slow start to the month with no play for the first couple of weeks.  When they finally managed to get out it was Sandra Petersen’s day coming in with a gross 84 followed by Carol Parkinson, Jenny Wilkie and Marilyn MacKenzie.  Sandra also won the putting with 25 putts and Julie Weber and Jenny Wilkie were the only ones to manage a two.

The Ladies also celebrated the 80th birthday of Mariana McDermott by having a few nibbles along with some bubbles.  They were also suitably entertained by Martinborough Line Dancing Troupe – a sight to behold!

Thursday Club have only managed to get out once this month with Sandy Bidwill taking the money with 39 points, Rob Coy, Martin Napier and Andy Morison on 35 points.  Nearest the pin went to Sheldon McNamara who also got his two and Sandy Bidwill the only other person to get a two that day.

On the Sunday was the Eastwood Motor Group Beef & Burgundy Ambrose with Dad’s Army, i.e. Owen & Tommi Lloyd, Mel Phillips and Sam Iraia having an amazing winning score of 53.37, 2nd was High Spec Housing, i.e. Jeremy Harp, Zeb Livingston, Chris Wenden and Phillip Granich with a nett 58.25 and 3rd Captain Kirk’s Team i.e. George Kirk, Andrew Smith, Philippa Kirk and Jayden Macrae with a nett 59.37.  A great day was had by all and a huge thank you to our tournament sponsors Eastwood Motor Group for providing a barbecue and drinks.

The following weekend was a Medal/Putting round with Jackson Gray having a nett 72, Rob Lopez and Chris Ranish having nett 74s.  Peter Schenk won the putting with 27 putts and once again no two’s to be had by anyone.

Sunday was the Dick Bennett 18 Hole 4BBB with 27 pairs coming out to play in pleasant conditions.   The Men’s winners were Peter & Jackson Gray with 42 points, Paul McKenzie and Chris Ranish on 41 points from Rob Lopez and Dean Schaef also on 41 points.  The winners of the Mixed Division were Andy & Netia Morison on 40 points, from Andrew Smith & Philippa Kirk on 38 points and Trevor & Sandra Petersen also on 38 points.  The Ladies Division was won by Marilyn MacKenzie and Julie Weber on 39 points.

Next month on Saturday 15th August is the Trust House Lefties/Righties Tournament with Sunday 16th being the reserve day.  If you would like to play please get your entry into the office.

That’s it for this month, let’s hope that next month proves to be a little drier.

Martinborough Lions Club news

The club has bounced back after a period of recess during the Covid Lockdown, with a lively meeting entertained with some excellent amateur drama in early July to celebrate “handover” to the new leadership team for the year. Joe Howells has taken on President, Margaret Bush Vice President, and Stuart McGrigor is the Club Secretary. Terry Blacktop continues as Treasurer. Our oldest member Ray Lind, who is 92, is the Club Almina. The Almina checks in with members who are going through more difficult times. … Continue Reading
