Regional Council Notes

There is many a belief or practice from days gone by that is no longer acceptable to modern society today.

Whether it be medicine, food, sport or just about anything else we do in our day to day lives, the thinking on what is right is constantly under review.  To prove this you only need to read some old reference books which can range from horrific information to the downright funny.

The Complete Home Doctor from the 1950s extolls the virtues of smoking to ease the worried mind and quiet anxiety.  School for the Horse and Rider from 1932 tells us that there is no reason why a lady cannot ride a horse as well as a man if she tries hard enough and At Home in Your Garden talks about the benefits of sprinkling DDT around the lawn.  These examples illustrate just how attitudes change over time.  … Continue Reading

August 7, 2020 August 2020 Comments Off on FIRE BRIGADE REPORT

As we return to pretty much normal life, our members have been busy catching up on previously cancelled training courses.

So congratulations to our 2 newest Firefighters Hannah Kennish and Melissa O’Brien both graduating the Recruit Firefighters Course, this will make our daytime crewing easier.

   Inner Wheel South Wairarapa

August 7, 2020 August 2020 Comments Off on    Inner Wheel South Wairarapa

We have been lucky to get some excellent publicity in the Midweek Wairarapa this month. It described Inner Wheel in its national and international context. While it showed off our knitting, the article also conveyed how we are so much more than a knitting circle. And to give a prime example, we can celebrate the wonderful achievement of former Inner Wheel District 294 Chair, Darlene Westrupp, for being elected to the International Inner Wheel’s Committee! Congratulations Darlene!

Our new President, Alma Parr has arranged a delightful occasion to celebrate her new role. This will be a special afternoon tea at the Old Court House in Carterton later in the month. … Continue Reading

“Help us stop the spread of pest plants before they come a problem

August 7, 2020 August 2020 Comments Off on “Help us stop the spread of pest plants before they come a problem

The Greater Wellington Biosecurity team needs your help to prevent the spread of moth plant, woolly nightshade and blue passionflower, which are becoming more established in the Wairarapa area. The damage caused by these three pest plants ranges from smothering and replacing native species, forming large masses, invading productive land to harming humans through poisonous seeds.

These plants are still in relatively low numbers in the Wellington Region. Our specialists can help to identify and manage other potential pest plant species that identified in the Regional Pest Management Plan.

If you think you’ve seen one of these plants, contact Greater Wellington on 0800 496 734, email pest.plants@gw.govt.nz or visit www.gw.govt.nz/pest-plants/

This month’s pest, the moth plant … Continue Reading
