Library news

The Summer Reading Programme for the children has started and Roz informs me it is ‘going to be just fabulous’ and I have no doubt she is right.  Emma and Roz are running the programme together this year as we no longer have the lovely Janet (she escaped to Masterton Library earlier in the year!).  This year the theme is ‘Wild about reading’ and as you can imagine the check-in pod will be alive with the mysteries and atmosphere of the jungle.  We have a limited number of places so register now to ensure your child can join in the fun.

Carrying on reading over the summer does help to ensure that a child’s reading level doesn’t drop from one school year to the next.  Children from 2 to 13 can join although the little ones will need some help from an adult.  Other news is the wind up for this year of the preschool reading session will be on Tuesday 12th December.

The Book Babies session will start at 10, as usual, and will have a special visitor around 10.30 and finish by 11.  So plan to be with us for a bit longer than usual to enjoy the wonderful morning Richmel has organised.  … Continue Reading

Amalgamation
Well this will be the last we can say on this topic – If you haven’t already voted, then please make sure you have your say and please pop your voting paper in the Council offices as they have a box for these in reception. This will ensure that your vote is received on time and can be counted. The deadline is 12th December at midday.

Annual Report
Congratulations to management and staff for the smoothest transition in preparing the Annual Report and sticking to the budgets during the year, a great result and a big tick from the Audit Office. It is great to see all the good work being done behind the scenes to make our community a safe and vital place to live and work. … Continue Reading

COMMUNITY BOARD UPDATE

December 19, 2017 December 2017, Regular Features Comments Off on COMMUNITY BOARD UPDATE

The Community Board has almost reached the end of a busy year, with its final meeting held last week. A further round of grants applications was received, and the Board was delighted to grant some ‘set up’ funds to a valuable new venture – the establishment of a Community Garden under the wing of the Ruamahanga Health Trust. This ticks many boxes including producing fresh food for the community but also will involve many locals.

Another project in town has been progressing quietly for some time. Our ‘Old Cemetery’ in Roberts Road is steeped in local history and the Board was informed of details of future plans to complete some vital repairs and improvements for this historic site. We were unanimous in being ‘right behind’ this project and will be urging the Council to do the same.

You may know that Martinborough is well on the way to being the hub of a designated ‘International Dark Sky Reserve’, and to become a member of the International Dark Sky Association. A recent meeting of supporters to establish the society, thanked the Board for being the first in town to offer universal support for this venture. … Continue Reading
