Community Guy Fawkes Display 2017

December 19, 2017 December 2017 Comments Off on Community Guy Fawkes Display 2017

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Martinborough Community Guy Fawkes Display on 4 November to watch the Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade light the biggest bonfire we have ever had! We would like to thank the major sponsors and supporters of the event – Martinborough Community Board for the fireworks; Martinborough Top 10 Holiday Park for the portaloos; and P&K Mitre 10 Martinborough for the use of the Mitre 10 bbq trailer and for a huge contribution to the bbq food and hot chocolates.  The event raised almost $3,000 for the Martinborough Junior Hockey Club which is just fantastic.  We have some lost property from the evening, so if you are missing a rug or the back of a camp chair, please contact Pippa Broom on 0274 169 102.

Dear Dr Jane

Dear Dr Jane
My husband is a farmer and I am worried that he is depressed. He is struggling to solve fairly simple problems on the farm and has lost all of his spark and enjoyment in life. He won’t talk to anyone about it and my hunch is that he is concerned about what people would think if he admitted that he was not coping. He has always liked to think of himself as strong and able. What can I do to help him?
Worried

Dear Worried
I’m glad you have written in as this is a very important topic to talk about. We all have a physical health and most people are generally okay with discussing physical health concerns with the appropriate professionals. What is less accepted is that we all have a mental health as well. As with our physical health, our mental health sometimes becomes compromised or temporarily ill.

This is a universal experience. It does not mean that an individual is weak or does not have a “back-bone”. It means that the biological mechanisms that support our ability to engage with the world in a meaningful way are not working in an optimal way. … Continue Reading

Martinborough Choir’s momentous year

December 19, 2017 December 2017 Comments Off on Martinborough Choir’s momentous year

This had been a momentous year for our choir.

As well as being our fifth birthday, it has also been a very difficult year for quite a few of our choir ‘family’, who have lost loved ones, who have had serious accidents, who have been dealing with illness, and other significant changes in their lives. Though it sounds a bit corny, I feel that we’ve been united by our joy of singing in harmony.

Every Tuesday, as Ed and I sit in the rehearsal hall waiting for choir members to arrive, I’m always grateful that so many people seem to enjoy our choir, and keep coming along, while I’m ‘learning on the job’.

This year we’ve been very lucky to have Mark Dorrell (an amazingly talented musician and teacher) as our Patron.

Mark has worked with the choir several times now, and we are learning a lot from him.

I hope our association with him will continue for many years hence, as he is so inspiring. … Continue Reading
