Kuranui Girl’s Football’s great season

The Kuranui Girl’s First Eleven football team has enjoyed a very successful season winning their competition for the second year in a row and also completing the season undefeated. The team was also named as the Kuranui Team of the Year at the College’s Awards Evening . 

A highlight was competing at the New Zealand Secondary Schools football competition for the Grant Jarvis Trophy which was held held over four days at Whanganui.  This competition attracts the best teams from colleges all over New Zealand with a total of twenty four teams taking part. Kuranui reached the semi finals to come in fourth place.  Given that Kuranui team is from a small college compared with most of the other competing teams this was a very meritorious placing.

Coach Chris James commented that in his considerable coaching experience he had never come across a friendlier or more dedicated group. 

The team is really grateful to have such an experienced coach as Chris whose training expertise was certainly a factor in their success.  Also a big thanks to their manager Wendy Turton  who looked after the organisational side of things to ensure that everything ran smoothly.

Learning to live without a car. 

Events can occur in our lives that change our lifestyle : Losing access to a car through whatever reason is one . It often comes upon us suddenly but we can be prepared . . . . .   thinking about some of the options available now,  gives us more power to make decisions when/if it does happen. 

These are some of the community options available : your first consideration may be Public Transport, such as buses by Tranzit or trains by Metlink. You can now buy a SNAPPER card from TRANZIT which makes bus fare paying so much easier for all local buses. Remember, Super Gold Card holders can travel for FREE –  9am to 3pm weekdays and during weekends on all buses and trains.

For medical visits within Wairarapa :

St John Wairarapa Health Shuttle pick up and deliver you home , Monday to Friday but you must make a booking at least 24 hours ahead. This is free but donation’s appreciated.   Red Cross Wairarapa also provide medical transport assistance within Wairarapa (and the wider province).  Whaiora Whanui, a whanau centred service can provide transport vouchers for their clients.  … Continue Reading

Marre’s musings

TAKE TIME for TREES.

The leadup to Xmas inevitably results in people getting a tree. Nowadays, it’s an essential part of the festivities. This was not always so: in fact the tree originally was used to celebrate the winter solstice, so not appropriate here – although with our current inclement weather, we can’t be too sure. The selected trees were evergreen to remind one of Spring. Probably just as well: a conglomeration of bare branches arranged beside the fire wouldn’t have looked too flash and may have led to … well, you get the idea. 

Trees were probably first associated with Christmas about 1000 years ago in Northern Europe. Towns usually had just one put up in the square (maybe we could do that here) and after a bit of song and dance, the tree was set on fire (perhaps ignore that idea, after all!) Today there’s one in almost every home with a booming industry making this possible. Would you believe in the UK, there’s about ten million grown every year just for the occasion.

Although I don’t celebrate Xmas, I love trees. Especially living, growing ones, so it makes me a bit sad to see the inevitable tree ‘discard-fest’ in the New Year. Fortunately, there’s an increasing fashion to reduce the destruction; all good!   So to complete this month’s musings is a poem with a tree theme which I wrote recently.
