Kuranui College is Wairarapa Hunting & Fishing College of the Year

Kuranui sport’s leaders with Kuranui Sports Director Kim Whiteman and Principal Simon Fuller.

Up against a strong field of nominations in this year’s Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards, Kuranui College succeeded in punching well above its weight to take home the coveted Wairarapa Hunting & Fishing College of the Year.

The 2020-21 field featured local sporting goliaths Rathkeale College, St Matthew’s Collegiate and Wairarapa College, but it was the increased participation by students generated from Kuranui’s new strategic plan for sport that really impressed the judges.

The college is no stranger to innovation and it quickly recognised that it had to adapt its approach to ensure that every one of its students had an opportunity to participate. Led by Kim Whiteman, a former General Manager of Netball Wellington and expert in sports change management, the plan was developed and implemented in 2019.

The strategic focus enabled the college to increase participation at a rate greater than its school roll growth. That was an aspirational goal given that the college has experienced over a 20% growth in its roll during the same period.

The focus included: growing relationships with Kuranui’s community, especially volunteers, funders, and sponsors; the establishment of a sports specific component to the school website for parents and students; a Code of Conduct supporting students and volunteers; pride in the uniforms that are also provided free of charge. … Continue Reading

Knees up

A prescription of education and exercise rather than medication and surgery may be just what the doctor ordered for people with some  cases of bad knees according to physiotherapy researchers from La Trobe University  Melbourne.

They evaluated the effects of an education and exercise programme on almost 2,000 Australians with knee osteoarthritis. Three quarters  of the people  reported clinical meaningful  improvement in pain or quality of life  and no longer wanted knee surgery.

Chloe Bing

Chloe Bing and her husband Michael moved to Martinborough 3 years ago, escaping from Auckland where house prices were climbing and the time to commute to work was increasing.

On leaving school Chloe opted to take Health Science at Auckland University. The first year of study provided a pathway to Psychology, Pharmacy or Medical School. Pharmacy was Chloe’s choice with 3 more years of study following.

After completing her internship Chloe moved to Otorohanga where she worked with six or seven staff members, two of whom were trained pharmacists.

After Chloe had been a year in Otorohanga, Michael was granted an opportunity to play for a Manchester Cricket team, so they took a 6 month break overseas. While Michael concentrated on Cricket, Chloe extended her skills by becoming the tea lady for the Cricket Club.

They returned to Auckland, staying with Chloe’s parents on a lifestyle block in Waitākere. Their three goals were to buy a house, arrange a wedding, and buy a car.

Meanwhile Chloe was commuting from Waitākere to Stanmore Bay on the Whangaparoa Peninsular a round trip of 100km a day. Even driving against the traffic, she would be leaving at 6.45 am starting work at 8.30am, finishing at 7.00pm. Saturday was 9.00am to 5.00pm. And on her day off she was often called in to help. … Continue Reading
