Community Garden News

“Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May.” So says the Bard…or in our case January!

All supports have become less supportive, and in some cases non-existent; some vegies are simply ‘browned-off’; most nets have flown to goodness knows where ; the artichokes have either been shredded or provided good shelter for those out of the direct force of the wind; the corn looks sad; lettuces are surviving; aubergines look positively healthy; tomatoes that have survived look OK, but slow to colour….

However, if you follow the MGC on Facebook you will note that we have delivered an abundance of produce to the Larder each week…courgettes and cucumbers have been as spectacular as ever; various forms of kale have provided good leavy greens, as have lettuce; beans have been regular producers, if not prolific, and we now have beetroot and onions coming up for harvest. Stalin’s wine cellar

In the late 1990s Australian John Baker, a well known as a purveyor of rare and old wines, and his sidekick, Canadian Kevin Hopko, were always on the lookout for examples of old vintages; often in forgotten cellars of  deceased trusts or breakups of rich marriages. Eventually a deal was made in which the businessman would pay for  John and  Kevin to travel to Georgia to check out the story in exchange for a quarter of any profits which may follow.

Stalin’s Wine Cellar is the story of what followed as told by John Baker and recorded by author Nic Pace.  … Continue Reading

February 9, 2021 February 2021 Comments Off on    BUSY NIGHTS AT MARTINBOROUGH BOWLING CLUB

Thursday night and it seems like half of Martinborough is at the bowling club. It’s twilight bowls and many of our townspeople assemble to participate in a friendly competition throughout the summer – there was a three week adjournment over Christmas and New Year.

Players; good, average, but mostly novices, form teams of three to compete against each other in a 1 hour contest each week. Such is the growing popularity of the competition, the Club had to introduce a two tier draw this summer.  One draw starts at 5.15pm and the second at 6.30. … Continue Reading
