Stunning cakes at Careme

July 8, 2013 July 2013 Comments Off on Stunning cakes at Careme

Stunning-cakes-at-CaremMarie Antoine Carême  was a famous French patissier, who gave his name to the Careme cooking academy in Martinborough.  He is often considered as one of the first internationally renowned celebrity chefs, and was an early practitioner and exponent of the elaborate style of cooking known as grande cuisine, the “high art” of French cooking. It seemed fitting that our own Careme school should honour him by holding a cake-making open day exactly 230 years after his birth on 8 June 1784.

About 20 people came along, eager to learn some of the secrets that have been passed down for more than two centuries. Jo Crabb, the academy’s Principal, was very pleased that everyone had lots of fun, which was the object of the day. … Continue Reading

South-wairarapa-Tramping-ClubOn a recent SWTC trip Stan Smith, Ed and Juliet Cooke, Carol Major and Bruce and Mary Lambert started from the end of Kiriwhakapapa Road. They report: ‘After a stop for smoko we carried on to the rock at the top at where we usually have lunch in the sun. However, a cold wind was blowing and the mountains were shrouded in cloud; so we didn’t hang around but headed for Blue Range Hut for lunch. On the way back, the wind wasn’t as cold below the Cow Creek turnoff. We took a short detour to bypass a slippery clay section at the bottom and got back to our cars in early afternoon.’

Rimutaka Country Music Group

July 8, 2013 July 2013 Comments Off on Rimutaka Country Music Group

Hi everyone. We had a fantastic turnout for our May gathering which was great to see. Kapi-Mana Country Music Association visited us, as did elements of Wainuiomata Country and Western Music Club, Upper Hutt Country Music Club and a few others. We had over 70 people present, many of whom were artists, which made for a most entertaining afternoon of country music.
Our guest artist, John de Burgh from Fielding, went down very well with a great selection (and variety) of country songs, smooth vocals and, all the while, playing guitar. His singing and humour was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Sincere thanks to John for helping make the afternoon such a great success. We look forward to hosting him again sometime.

Looking ahead we have Dougie and Nancy Warren from Wellington entertaining as our guest artists on 27 July. Capable country music artists in their own right, they bring a passion for the more traditional, though no less entertaining, style of country music. … Continue Reading
