The course is finally starting to play more like winter golf, with a lot less run on the fairway and no run if you miss the fairway! Members handicaps are starting to settle, with a number of members’ lowest-ever handicaps this summer creeping back out again.
The Ladies 18 Hole Open Day held on Friday 3 June was a great success. The course was literally sparkling as a light frost greeted a field of 60 players from Carterton, Pahiatua, Shandon, Miramar, Masterton, Riversdale Beach, Judgeford, Napier, Dannevirke, Kapiti, Karori, Manor Park, Boulcott Heritage Farm and 19 of our own members from Martinborough. Excitingly the overall winner was relatively new Martinborough member, Louise Smith with a Nett 66. She shot a personal best of 94 off the stick, and won the Sherry Weatherstone Best Nett Cup for her efforts. … Continue Reading
I recently attended two public events in Martinborough. Both related to important community matters and both were notable for the lack of attendance.
The first one was hosted by the Local Government Commission and its purpose was to update the community on progress towards the reorganisation of the four Councils that govern Wairarapa. About twenty members of the public attended and it’s fair to say that those who were present asked great questions and made their opinions known. It’s just a shame that their wasn’t a bigger attendance.
The second was organised by the region’s civil defence organisation and aimed at ensuring we have a coherent community plan in the event of any major emergency. Unfortunately the turnout for this was even fewer with only two members of the public feeling the need to be involved. I’m not sure if people just didn’t know or had more pressing things to do on a Sunday but somehow we need to get better involvement than this.
The Christchurch earthquakes highlighted that there simply is not enough official resource to manage, fix or care for every situation in a major emergency. Communities must stand alone for days and sometimes weeks. To do this we need to know where our resources are and who can do what.
The Community Response Plans for each town are work in progress led by the Wellington Region Emergency Management Organisation. It would be really great if there could be more public input as this work comes together.
Mayoral Candidate for South Wairarapa
Although the formal announcement for the Mayoralty has been announced I believe it is important that I continue to inform citizens and ratepayers about the attributes I believe I can offer in this role.
My overwhelming reason for standing for public office is to serve the peoples of this district. This district has rich diversity. I am sure economic growth that has been spearheaded by Martinborough and Greytown can be enhanced with positive strategic development for the gateway town Featherston giving the south the trifecta and leadership for Wairarapa.
The three district councils in Wairarapa are currently working through with Local Government NZ to reach agreement for amalgamation to make a Wairarapa wide Council in some form or another. This will bring challenges ensuring the south gets the appropriate voice in this scenario and ensures that ratepayers are well serviced and the key functions are maintained to a high standard.
I believe I have the experience and skills to be a strong advocate for the south whilst understanding the entire valley needs. … Continue Reading
