MARTINBOROUGH RUGBY CLUB

July 25, 2016 July 2016, Sports Comments Off on MARTINBOROUGH RUGBY CLUB

Junior-rugby-Team-talk- The rugby season is ticking along, the weather has been playing the part which means big crowds at games soaking up the sun and some great rugby. Our Club Day was a highly successful day, with continuous rugby from 9.30am, the JAB running a sausage sizzle, and a lunch prepared by Joanne TeKani for the “Old-Timers”, it was certainly very busy.

The new hit shields have arrived for the JAB & Seniors, made in our green and black, these not only look great but will have plenty of use before the season ends. These were funded by Trust House.
Our new oven has arrived, this was partly funded by Eastern & Central Community Trust and we look forward to using it at our remaining home games. Our kitchen looks great, definitely a venue to consider if you are organising a function – contact Nicholle Hawkins 02108367237 if you are interesting in booking.
On Saturday the 18th we were fortunate to have the Rugby World Cup visit our Clubrooms, this was a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with this trophy, although only rugby greats who win the World Cup get to hold it it was still a great chance to be photographed with it. … Continue Reading

A Huge thank you to everyone for a superb Book Fair result
Please see the accompanying item with a fuller account of our successful fair last month – we can hardly thank everyone enough. Money raised will be used to maintain First Church’s presence in Martinborough and to make our buildings safe, and members feel very encouraged by the generous response and goodwill of the wider community.

Special mention must be made of our convener Carol Hawkins who headed the team so well which gave such a great result – a record $7,000!

We celebrate 145 years
On Sunday, August 7th there is to be a celebration of the founding of First Church, marking 145 of worship, service and witness in the South Wairarapa. We will have a special Church Service at 10.00am, expressing thanksgiving, recollections of the past and importantly looking ahead to explore ways of continuing to be a relevant and effective presence in Martinborough.

This will be followed by lunch in the Hall. If you have had some connection with First Church at any time in its history – were baptised, married, attended Sunday School or Bible Class, were or are a member of our church family, we warmly invite you to join us. To assist with catering, please contact Mary Smith on 306 9594 by July 31st.

One Umbrella fits all

What a privilege it is to be a part of the community that is “Martinborough”
The Midwinter Monster Book fair in mid- June might be the last significant community function held our elderly town hall before refurbishment takes place, and this 7th Annual Mid-Winter Book Fair was an outstanding success, with bargain good-quality books going out the door all weekend. It is heartening to see that despite the technology advancements of Kindle, e-books and the like there is still a place for real books.
This event is about the recycling of books, and a mighty team effort, which saw many people from in and around Martinborough willingly giving up time to support this cause.
Sincere thanks are extended to the people of Martinborough and the wider community – all those who responded to the need to help with all the different tasks to make the fair work. … Continue Reading

SOUTH WAIRARAPA PROBUS CLUB

A STIMULATING MONTH

A large group of us set off in a Tranzit bus on a beautiful clear morning, over the hill to Wellington for a very stimulating day. In the morning we visited the Te Papa Gallipolli exhibition at Te Papa. We elected to go through in our own time rather than as a large conducted tour.

I think the impact of the exhibition is largely due to Richard Taylor’s decision to focus on the personal experiences of eight people. This brings the horror and hardship (and the great personal relationships) of war home in a way which is impossible with dignified imposing statues. The figure of the doctor sitting quietly looking down meditating on the very small contribution he has been able to make in the face of hundreds of wounded after battle just about moved me to tears. … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …
