OXFORD STREET FOOTPATH

June 12, 2014 June 2014 Comments Off on OXFORD STREET FOOTPATH

Some progress has been made in persuading the SWDC to install progressively a temporary walkway/footpath on one side of Oxford Street. This is from near Regent Street to the junction with Todds Road, about 700 metres.

Forty six local residents signed a letter to the Council last November and their representative, Hiatt Cox, made a verbal submission to the Council’s Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 recently. He pointed out that the amount of money involved in laying a limestone walkway would be about $6,000 per year if the project was split over 2 years. Council was challenged as to whether a relatively small project of this scale could be started now with unspent budget monies or in some other way.

At this stage the project remains as a ‘submission’ to the Plan. Hiatt is hopeful that Council may yet find a way to get this small but necessary project underway soon.

Meanwhile walking on the narrow roadway remains a hazard for both residents and visitors.

Medici Lecture series for June

June 12, 2014 June 2014 Comments Off on Medici Lecture series for June

The first of the speakers for the 19th series of lectures to be held at the Medici Café in June is Shane Arndell. Shane, who will talk on Thursday June 5, was Captain of HMNZS Te Mana, New Zealand’s latest fighting frigate. He will talk about its role in conducting defence diplomacy in Asia, training for combat and hunting pirates off Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden.

On June 12 Jared Gulian will talk about his experiences as an “Accidental Olive Farmer”. When he moved to Martinborough in 2006 he had no idea that he was setting in motion events that would help him realise life time goals. His adventures were comical and staying open to opportunity led to more good fortune than he could possibly have imagined. … Continue Reading

Library busier than ever

June 12, 2014 June 2014 Comments Off on Library busier than ever

Library-News-It has a been just over a year since we moved into the Village Library site on the 6th of May 2013.  However it still feels like yesterday and we are still making small adjustments, but I suspect that will be an on-going process.  I am still up to my usual trick of trying to squeeze as many books in as possible.

The interior design and garden design section now has a lot of beautiful big new books.    The hunting section has grown to encompass a whole shelf to itself with quite a few recent new additions.  If you are ready for a bit of romance in your life, the shelves are bursting with new books and there is a handy leaflet guide for  books similar to ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’.  … Continue Reading
