June 13, 2022 June 2022 Comments Off on Pianist Thomas Nikora with the Wellington Chamber Orchestra for Matariki concert

Pianist Thomas Nikora will feature in  the Wellington Chamber Orchestra Matariki concert at Featherston’s ANZAC Hall on Sunday June 26th.

This Matariki programme features Great Tunes from the Golden Age of the Movies, arranged by talented conductor Michael Vinten (also a former director of Cantoris).

Names such as Gershwin, Shostakovich, Walton and Korngold are to the fore, and Thomas will play what are really mini-concertos on pieces like Warsaw Concerto and New York Rhapsody. … Continue Reading

SOUTH WAIRARAPA REBUS CLUB

A group of 11 members made an autumn “Fifth Friday” visit to Ngawi and Cape Palliser on 29 April in a 12-seater rental van. After picking up members from Carterton, Greytown and Martinborough, we drove to the native plant nursery operated by the Kohunui Marae Trust, just south of Burnside Church on Lake Ferry Road. There we were met by Teresa Aporo, Chair of the Kohunui Trust, who was our host at the nursery and our guide on the trip to Cape Palliser. As the marae itself was under maintenance restrictions, we spent our time there in the plant nursery. Native plants are raised under contract to Aorangi Restoration Trust from seed collected locally by numbers of volunteers. The nursery manager, Riki Te Tau, explained the work they were doing from planting seeds to delivery of the hardened plants. It was an impressive and professional operation, with just two part-time paid workers. Riki is doing an on-line horticulture course and Riria Aporo is starting hers in the next semester. … Continue Reading

Regional council Notes

When the government delivers its budget there are some who rub their hands in glee and others who shake their heads in disbelief.  Never is everybody happy and this year’s offering was no exception.

Of course, an extra twenty-seven dollars a week will be a help for many, unless you are a pensioner then you miss out.  Having the government offering decent money for your old jalopy will no doubt be a carrot for some as well.

For Wairarapa though, what we were really hoping for was approval of the funding needed for our new trains, which of course, was not forthcoming.  Why?  Because it was not a priority for the government this year we were told.

This seems a bit odd given the climate change focus of the budget and the emissions reduction plan.  Transport is a big contributor to New Zealand’s emissions so surely improving public transport and taking private cars off the road should play a key role?   … Continue Reading

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …

Martinborough Golf Club has tumbled down

The demolition of the Martinborough Golf Club is complete. In the last days prior to Christmas a fully-insulated pole shed, much like a top end farm outbuilding, was erected to act as both office and temporary clubhouse. New septic tanks, internet connectivity, power, water, and Porticom loos were installed. On …
