Those who were present at our January meeting were privileged to have local resident Heather Atkinson as our guest speaker. In 1988 Heather, together with her late husband Ian, decided to convert their Pirinoa family farm, Wharerata, into a resilient, organic unit, obtaining certification from BioGroNZ  in 1990. The 244 ha farm has 8.5 ha in native regeneration under a QE2 covenant and 13.5 ha planted in eucalyptus. Round the Vines is 25 years! 

This year Round the Vines will be celebrating the 25^th year of the iconic 10 & 21km walking and running event, on Saturday 20^th March 2021.

Déjà Vu

I feel I must express my disquiet on reading your short, unattributed article in the February edition of the Star, titled “Deja Vu”. I am especially concerned with the last sentence, “researchers say that it is a good sign indicating that your facilities (sic) are in good working order.”

Deja vu is a common early sign, and in some people the ONLY symptom of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. It can, in some cases, lead on to the tonic/clonic seizures typical of epilepsy. It is classed as an ‘aura’ by some neurologists, and as a seizure in itself by others.

A diagnosis of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy means taking long term medication, and loss of your driver’s licence until you have been symptom – free for 12 months.

I urge anyone suffering from deja vu more than a couple of times to seek a medical opinion.

I have recently been diagnosed with TLE and face having to take medication for the rest of my life and the instruction that I must not drive for 12 months. I live rurally outside of Martinborough and this is going to be a major disruption to my life. My only symptom was deja vu, there was no loss of awareness, or absence, or “fit.”
