Martinborough Lions news

March 10, 2021 March 2021 Comments Off on Martinborough Lions news

Martinborough Lions supported Camp Quality at Riversdale Beach in January by running the Sand Castle building site. Camp Quality brings fun, hope and happiness into the lives of children living with cancer – inspiring them to get on with being kids again. Some of our Lions proved quite innovative at Sand Castle building and lots of fun was had by all.

At our first meeting for Martinborough Lions voted to step up their support for the Aorangi Restoration Trust by running a second predator trap line on the Palliser Bay Coast. Lions put out over 30 new traps targeting the predators of our precious sea and migratory birds, which often nest in a shallow scrape in the sand or soil on the coast.  We may even encourage some Little Blue Penguins back onto our coast! Education is required to ensure that seabird nesting areas around the coast are not disturbed by livestock or vehicles as well. … Continue Reading

TIES that BIND

Recent news coverage, to coin a phrase, about garb that people are gadding about in has proved entertaining. My interest was sparked by the carry-on in Parliament when new member Rawiri Waititi turned up without a standard issue tie, wearing a hei-tiki instead. [It’s part of] Maori business attire – he said – not a colonial noose. Cultural dress apparently included his ten-gallon hat. I thought to ask why, but that’s another story. Wearing a hat inside is not illegal, but goes against common courtesy, and the cowboy connection, should there be one, is a bit scarey.  … Continue Reading

Fundraising for Wharekaka

March 10, 2021 March 2021 Comments Off on Fundraising for Wharekaka

Like other charities in these tough times, fundraising has been top of mind for the Wharekaka Board and Auxiliary.

Wharekaka’s wonderful Auxiliary held a stall at the Christmas Te Kairanga market, courtesy of Foley Family Wines, and raised over $1500. Goodies such as superb shortbread, meringues, and Christmas cake were all snapped up by fair-goers. … Continue Reading

From the Mayor

March 10, 2021 March 2021 Comments Off on From the Mayor

Good weather has been hitting us at last, with very high temperatures all February, and prospects of a great March. This has been perfect for our events, most notably the Martinborough Fair, which broke all sorts of records for visitors and stalls.

By the end of the month, we should have launched our Long Term Plan consultation, alongside options for future residential growth, which is one of the step towards developing a complete, district-wide Spatial Plan. … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …

Martinborough Golf Club has tumbled down

The demolition of the Martinborough Golf Club is complete. In the last days prior to Christmas a fully-insulated pole shed, much like a top end farm outbuilding, was erected to act as both office and temporary clubhouse. New septic tanks, internet connectivity, power, water, and Porticom loos were installed. On …
