Deer stalking around Martinborough

New Zealand is indebted to Prince Albert for donating some of Windsor Park’s Deer to this country in 1862. Six red deer were forwarded by the New Zealand Agent in London, a Stag and two hinds for Canterbury and the same number for Wellington. Unfortunately a Stag and Hind died on the way and so  they all ended up in Wellington in 1863.

C R carter took possession of them and had them delivered to his Wairarapa property by W Hastwell where  James Robieson was put in charge of their care. John Martin obtained breeding stock from them for his Puratanga property where they flourished . From time to time animals escaped and took off into the bush of the Mungaraki ranges and then down into the Haurangi ranges.

A public notice gazetted April 1886: ‘Only stags and bucks may be shot in the Wellington/Wairarapa District between  April 10th and  May 10th 1886’ Over the next ten years the Acclinatisiation Society  went into the ranges beyond Martinborough to secure  young fawns  for government  liberation  in the Waikaremoana and Manawatu. These along with stock from John Martin’s property. … Continue Reading

Judy Shakespeare making a presentation to Kyra

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

As mentioned in last month’s edition, it has been the intention of our Inner Wheel Club to significantly change the life of at least one local girl by substantially helping her to participate in a course at Outward Bound. The great news is that by the time you read this, three local girls will have been on this fantastic course.

We invited Kyra, our first recipient, to speak at our last monthly meeting and were hugely encouraged by her words. She spoke warmly and enthusiastically about her life-changing experience on the course. From the challenge of fund-raising to the work experience she undertook in order to make her own financial contribution to the course fee, Kyra was eloquent in her praise and appreciation of this unique opportunity.

She described some of the highlights and challenges she had had to face on the course, some while working as part of a team and some, like overnighting in the bush, on her own! Character building!  … Continue Reading

It’s better to let the Star spread the news

We are fortunate to have wonderful contributors who regularly provide interesting articles for the Star. Feedback assures that these are read and greatly appreciated. What we are light on is general news.

Martinborough is the centre of a vibrant district with lots of interesting things going on. Our job is to spread the word on these – but just need you to tell us about them.

Local items of general interest are the life blood of a community newspaper. Something new to the area, special celebrations, unusual happenings, record events, inventions, people of interest, these are what really gives the paper a real local flavour. Please let us know if you are aware of anything of interest.  … Continue Reading

FILL THEM UP

May 23, 2018 May 2018 Comments Off on FILL THEM UP

Moving away from plastic bags is a major hurdle for many businesses, especially butchers. Plastic bags make handling meat convenient for both butcher and customer. Our local butcher Scotty would like to be able to wrap meat in brown paper. For him to achieve this, he’d need a major revamp of the butcher shop, to make room to roll this out.

In the meantime, Scotty is happy for customers to bring in their own containers for their meat. It couldn’t be easier!  Take your container home, store your meat in the fridge, wash your container and bring it back to be filled again!
