Thirteen years ago when I was the newly elected mayor of South Wairarapa I was strongly opposed to changes in the structure of local government in any shape or form. It was assumed that any amalgamation of councils would see control shifted to Masterton and local decision making would be lost.
Also, if I’m totally honest, as a newly elected mayor I wasn’t too keen on seeing my recently acquired position disestablished, especially when support for amalgamation was virtually non-existent in the south at the time.
During the four terms I served as Mayor I was actively involved in the many, many hours of work, across the three Wairarapa councils, which went into investigating what local government should look like over here. During this time the waters were muddied by the Wellington Super City debate and while I was totally opposed to Wairarapa being an annex of Wellington, I fully now support the concept of a Combined Wairarapa Council.
So what’s changed you might ask? It’s simple really. Twelve years of being inside the tent has shown me the shortcomings of all three councils and their lack of critical mass. DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE NEW YEAR to think about taking on something different: get started NOW so that when the New Year dawns you’ll already be at the starting line of your new activity and ready to roll.
South Wairarapa Tramping Club provides a friendly and safe environment for newcomers looking to do something different with their weekend leisure time. Trip leaders and others in the group are experienced in the outdoor environment and operate within the recognised safety code.
The advantages of group participation in walking and tramping are numerous. For starters, the safety in numbers factor ensures that you are not on your own in an unfamiliar environment. Add to this the benefits of exhilarating physical exercise in the open air, the companionship of people who share a common interest in walking/tramping and the sense of achievement and wellbeing at the end of a day’s outing with the club.
From the trip list which is printed in the monthly SWTC newsletter, you choose the type of activity that interests you. Trips are classified according to the level of fitness required. For example:
VE/Very Easy: A stroll suitable for the youngest, oldest and least fit of people.
E/Easy: up to four hours walk. May involve some uphill. Lots of stops.
M/Moderate fitness: 4-6 hours walk per day. Lunch and smoko breaks.
F/More fitness: Some experience needed. May go off tracks. 6-8 hours walk per day.
FE/Fitness Extreme: 8-18 hours walk, fast. Heaps of climbing. Stops are hurried. (May take up to a week to recover!)
For upcoming trip details please phone Barry Kempton (304 9353), or for information relating to the South Wairarapa Tramping Club phone Carol Major (304 8210). Website: www.swtc.org.nz
