Martinborough Golf Club Report

Life is relatively normal out on the Golf Course with usual weekly competitions being played along with a couple of tournaments.  The course is looking amazing at the moment with lots of visitors commenting on how good it is playing.

Thursday Club has been getting good turnouts with recent winners being Nick Morison, Doug Clark, Dale Keith, Alistair Petrie, Rob Smith, Rob Coy and Rob Lopez.  Twos have gone to Jason Shaw (4), Rob Lopez (3), Anna Possenniskie (2), Ed Elworthy (2), Malcolm Wood (2), Pete Price (2), Dayle Scrimshaw (2), Doug Clark, Craig Andrews, Rob Coy, Tony Taylor, George Kirk, Matt Thomas, Brent McKinlay, Guy Walmsley, Bill Jago, Shayne Hammond, Sandy Bidwill, Chris Ranish and Vern Anton.

Recent winners in the weekend competitions have been Guy Walmsley, Peter Schenk (twice), Jan Ferguson, George Kirk, Paul Riddiford, Derek Stephens, Chris Ranish, Brent McKinlay and John Warner.  Twos have gone to Doug Clark (3 in one round), Derek Stephens (2), Jason Shaw (2), John Warner (2), Josh Hawkins, Warwick McKee, Brian Russo, Jason Burt, Malcolm Wood, George Kirk, Peter Schenk and Guy Walmsley.

Winning ladies over the last few weeks have been Angela Busby, Carol Parkinson, Honor Clark, Karen Shaw, Jo Loe and Sarah Monaghan.  Twos have gone to Honor Clark (2), Lyle Griffiths (2), Carol Parkinson, Roz Harding and Netia Morison.

At the end of September we hosted the AB Martin Mixed 4Somes with Ro & Lyle Griffiths and Doug & Jan Ferguson sharing the AB Martin Trophy.  Other winners on the day included Nigel & Debbie Walker (Otaki), Cate and Andrew Crombie (Royal Wellington), Raymond Matthews & Mariana McDermott and Richard & Nicola Warren.

At the beginning of October we held the Mens 54/36 Hole Open.  The 54 hole winners were:  1st Gross Adam Church (Judgeford), 2nd Perry Hayman (Judgeford),

1st Nett Nick Morison, 2nd Dion Bennett (Judgeford), 3rd Colin Whibley Smith, 4th Michael Rust, 5th Rob Lopez, 6th Paul McKenzie.  36 Hole winners were:  1st Gross Doug Clark, 2nd Dean Walker (Judgeford), 3rd George Kirk, 1st Nett Brock Shute (Royal Wellington), 2nd Peter Stevens (Masterton), 3rd Wayne Mowat (Hastings), 4th Brett Krause (Royal Wellington), 5th Wayne Eagleson (Royal Wellington), 6th Ro Griffiths, 7th Raymond Matthews, 8th Gordie Ritson (Royal Wellington), 9th Pete Price and 10th Peter Martin.

Overall best gross round 1 Adam Church, round 2 Perry Hayman and round 3 Adam Church.

Best Nett overall round 1 Raymond Matthews, round 2 Brock Shute and round 3 Nick Morison.

Two weeks later we hosted the Eastwood Motor Group Lamb & Chardonnay Ambrose.  The winning team with a nett score of 58 were Jason Shaw, Brent McKinlay, Josh Hawkins and Jack Allen, 2nd Malcolm Bridge, Pete Price, Jane Fanselow-Price and Greg Dalton, 3rd Jeremy Harp, Phillip Granich, Zeb Livingston and Shane Mellor (Mahunga), 4th Jason, Kavarn and Isaac Walker and Rodney Dravitzki (Mahunga) and 5th Brian Russo, Tony Taylor, Johnson and Takarangi Williams.

Coming up over the next few weeks we have Club Championship finals on 7th November, Murray Halberg Day on Thursday 11th, Saturday 13th we are hosting our 36 Hole Mixed 4Somes, the course is closed on Saturday 20th November as we are hosting the Wellington Champion of Champions and Sunday 28th November is Shoot Out finals day – so all in all a busy few weeks ahead.

While it’s pretty tough going for many events in the current Covid-19 climate, there’s a little local one that’s gearing up to forge ahead – welcoming garden lovers to the region on 6 & 7 November.
The Wairarapa Garden Tour is a major annual fundraiser for Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. Last year the tour sold out. “We’re down to our last tickets with two weeks to go so it’s looking set to be another sellout,” says event organiser Rachael Dell.   “Because the tour is outdoors and runs over two days in 13 defined spaces (ie gardens) the event is reasonably insulated from the challenges of putting on an event at Level 2,”  she says.   … Continue Reading

The finding from a secondary analysis of the Strength trial was presented to the American College of Cardiology’s 70 th annual scientific session. This showed at-risk cardiovascular patients with the highest levels of eicosapentaenoic acid in their blood as a result of taking a daily prescription grade  fish oil supplement had just as m major cardiovascular events  as a group of similar patients given a corn oil placebo 

Healthier Irish

Researchers found that Irish adults  shopping and cooking habits  changed for the better during the 2020 lockdown. Shoppers were more likely to plan their meals for the week and head to the shop with a list and plan their meals for the week – actions linked with healthier eating. 

Study participants also noted that they gained confidence in cooking and preparing  nutritious meals  and threw way less food during the lockdown.
